two proposals to increase rates by
nearly 25 percent.
The company says they're not
making enough money in Virginia to keep
up with operational costs.

Appalachian customers are
experiencing a case of de ja vu-- It
was only two years ago that the power
company tried to increase its' utility
rates by 25 percent.

This time AEP isn't imposing interium
rates...but plans to wait at least 150
days for a decison from SCC.
Here's what company is asking :
The first increase would be in the base
utlitity rate. Say you use 1-thousand
kilowatt hours a month-- a 25 percent
increase would add about 18 dollars to
your bill.
Customers would also see a rise in
environmental and reliability recovery
surcharge. The average increase would
be less than 2 percent.

into a shooting last night in
Christiansburg.
Authorities say a Montgomery
County Sheriff's Deputy was at the Red
Oak Mobile Home Park trying to find
Donald Lovern when Lovern came out and
confronted the officer with a knife.
Authorities say the deputy shot
the 43-year-old in the leg.
The deputy wasn't hurt.
The shooting is under
investigation.

He beat incumbent John Hager
(HAY-ger) , who's a former lieutenant
governor.

could effectively organize a campaign
against Mark Warner when he used to
work for him as director of Virginia's

renovated and expanded.
This is the first major
renovation for this "Y" in 50 years.
Built in 1953, the family center
was originally segregated serving

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

The art students spent the day
painting a mural on the wall in the
pediatric emergency waiting room.
Once done, it should resemble
Mill Mountain Zoo.
The artists also plan to brighten
up eight patients' rooms and three
hallways.
The students hope the paintings
will soften the hospital's atmosphere
and put patients at ease.

this weekend.

have teamed up with Angel Food
Ministries.
The non profit is selling 27 tons
of food across the Commonwealth for
half price.
Which means a 65 dollar box of
food will go for about 30 bucks.

bandwagon to help including Sovereign
Grace Community in Roanoke.

mainly east of the Blue Ridge this
evening. Seek shelter if a storm
threatens your area. Gusty wind,
dangerous lightning and heavy rain are
concerns with any thunderstorm which
develops this evening. Most rain and
storms end late Saturday night with

faced a survival Saturday at the
College World Series, taking on top
seeded Florida in an elimination game
in Oklahoma City.

She threw 160 pitches in the game and
struck out 19 Gators getting her to 2
thousand 149 for her career.
The Gators Stacey Nelson was
equally impressive, allowing just 2
Virginia Tech hits in the ballgame.
It was scoreless into the
bottom of the 7th when the Hokies Erin
Ota hit a shot to the gap in right
center where the Florida centerfielder
misplayed the ball, allowing Ota to
motor into third with no one out.
Florida would walk the bases
loaded, but Kelsey Hoffman then hit
into a rally killing double play as the
Gators got the force at home and then
the out at first to keep Tech off the
board.
Extra innings weren't kind
to the Hokies. Florida loaded the
bases for Mary Ratliff who smacked one
thru the hole at short. That would
score two runs, and that was the
difference. Tech couldn't

University next weekend, meaning that
the Highlanders Athletic Director
Robert Lineburg will once again be
plenty busy.
Grant Kittelson caught up with
the Radford native and who is wrapping
up his first few months on the job as
the man in charge of R-U Athletics.

and into the 4th. Sharapova beat
Italy's Karin Knapp 7-6, 6-0 today. It
was a long match as Sharapova needed 81
minutes to wrap up the first set.
In men's play, top-seed Roger
Federer defeated Mario Ancic 6-3, 6-4,
and 6-2.
