store parking lot and then later kill
herself.
Police say Kelly Maxey shot Mark

Today, investigators are trying
to piece together what triggered the
shooting.

Last Night It started last night just before
eight o'clock at the Food Lion on
Peters Creek Road.
According to witnesses- a woman
shot Mark Sable three or four times
before he took off and got help inside
the store.
It was at this point- Sable told
people he had been shot by his
ex-girlfriend, Kelly Maxey.

to Maxey's home off of Parkview Drive.
According to a search warrant
-police knocked on the door and moments
later they heard a bang.
One neighbors heard the commotion
and couldn't believe what had happened.

investigators learn more about a
separate crime in Pittsylvania County.

May 29 Alphonso Destin has been
accused of taking part in the murder of
Wilber West.
A home on Leewood Road where
Destin had been living was searched a
second time this weekend.
Investigators found items that
were reported stolen from a home in
Gretna back in April.
A search warrant shows someone
phoned Alphonso Destin's brother from
that same Grenta home, during the time
of the breaking and entering.

of people in Montgomery County.

traffic along Pepper's Ferry Road
today.
Blacksburg crews that maintain
that portion of the water line finished
repairs this afternoon.
They say the age of the piping
caused the break.
It happened around 7 a-m and
flooded part of Route 114.
The line supplies water to people
in Christiansburg, Blacksburg and
Montgomery County.
Part of the roadway was washed
out, too.
That will take longer to repair,
and traffic is still down to one lane.

three and a half hours. Doctors say
the operation was successful and that
they accomplished their goals. They
don't expect any permanent
neurological damage from the
procedure..which was
just the first step in Senator
Kennedy's battle with brain cancer.
When he
came out of surgery, he told his wife
"I feel like a million bucks."

The senator's tumor is a particularly
serious kind...called a malignant
glioma. Kennedy referred to it simply
as an "unexpected health
challenge"...but doctors say the
76-year old lawmaker will be facing
tough
odds. Patients rarely live more than
three years and half die within one
year.

the Kennedys about a week of research
to
decide on the Duke University Medical
Center. And the senator is in good
hands
here..under the care of one of the
country's top neurosurgeons.

Colleagues call him a "thought leader"
in
his field...an expert in ultra delicate
brain surgery. The senator's tumor is
above his left ear...in an area that
controls both speech and movement. The
trick is to remove as much of the
growth as possible without harming the
healthy brain tissue. Doctors often
keep patients conscious so they can
check
language functions while they probe for
a safe pathway to operate.

Kennedy expects to recuperate here in
Durham for the next week, then return
to
Massachusetts General for radiation
and chemotherapy. After that, he says
he
plans to be back in the senate to help
Barack Obama become president.

The bills were signed into law by

for rape kits, which can cost up to 25-
hundred dollars.

crack cocaine last night.

the drugs to research an acting role.
Later she admitted she had relapsed

D-A's office is recommending O'Neal
receive drug treatment.
The 44 year old actress was the

Center. High pressure that brought
the sunshine Monday will move off the
coast tonight allowing a front to slide
south and stall in the Ohio Valley
Tuesday and Wednesday. Clouds will
thicken tonight, and we'll notice more
clouds than sun Tuesday with a few
afternoon/evening storms. Tuesday
Night and into Wednesday, the front
will sag farther south. This provides
the best chance of showers and storms
to the northwestern sections of the
viewing area, and lesser chances east
through Wednesday afternoon. Highs will
gradually warm to the mid and upper 80s
through Wednesday. Thursday, the warm
front will move to the north, with
extremely warm and muggy afternoon

- it's apparent that the two best moves
of the NASCAR's off-season belong to
the former coach of the Redskins, Joe
Gibbs.
It's just hard to tell if
acquiring Kyle Busch or getting out of
coaching was the best move.
Right now it looks like the
decision to bring on NASCAR's bad boy
is winning out.
We're barely into June and Busch
and crew chief Steve Addington already
have four Cup wins and the lead Points
race - with no signs of letting up.

state championship week has finally
arrived and for those teams lucky
enough to survive - it's now down to
elite eight in all spring sports.
The state quarterfinals take
place tomorrow all across the state
with the winners advancing to the
Spring Jubilee in Radford on Friday and
Saturday.

April 16th One of the more interesting
:00 quarterfinal matchups tomorrow will be
in Group Two baseball where the redhot
Alleghany Mountaineers host Hidden
Valley.
This is a rematch of a game
played on April 16th on the Titans'
home field in Roanoke County in which
the Mounties won a shootout 13-to-10.
This has been a magical year for
Alleghany and head coach Gary Rice.
Earlier this year he picked up his
400th career win.
And this year's Mountaineers are
the winningest team in school history
with a 23-and-1 record. Along the way
they have captured the Blue Ridge
district title and the Region Three
crown.
The Titans will try to counter
all of that with pitcher Mikey O'Brien
on the mound. O'Brien is unbeaten this
season .

the country's largest banks has fired
its C-E-O
The Board of Wachovia Corporation
removed Kennedy Thompson this morning
Wachovia has lost more than half
its market value in the past year --
costing shareholders millions of
dollars.
Among other problems, Thompson
was blamed for buying into the
California real estate bubble only
months before it burst.
Meanwhile on Wall Street, the
stock markets finished lower today.
The Dow fell 134 points to close at
12,503.

an unusual final request before he died
last month.
Fredric Baur was so proud of
inventing the Pringle's Potato Chip
can, he asked that some of his ashes
buried in one of his containers.
Baur was a chemist and food storage
researcher at Procter and Gamble in
1966 when he came up with the Pringles
package.
He was 89 years old.

international space station will soon
have working pipes again.

VO-NAT The space shuttle Discovery
successfully docked with the station
this afternoon.
The shuttle is delivering a pump
in order to repair the only toilet
aboard the Space Station which broke
more than a week ago.
Discovery is also delivering a 1
billion dollar Japanese science lab as
well as the station's newest resident,
Astronaut Gregory Chamitoff
(Cham-it-off).
He will replace the current
resident, Garrett Reisman (Rise-man).
