It started last night when police
got word a man had been shot in a Food
Lion Parking lot.
It happened just before eight
o'clock last night on Peters Creek
Road.
Thirty-nine year old Mark John
Sable was taken to the hospital. There
is no word on his condition.

asked Roanoke County Police to help
locate a person of interest in that
shooting.
Shortly after they arrived at the
home off of Parkview Drive -officers
heard a gun shot.
Kelly Lynne Maxey apparently died
of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police say Maxey was the "person
of interest" -they were looking for.
She was 46 years old.

in Danville.
Police say around seven o' clock,
they got a call of shots fired in the
600 block of Warsham Street.
When they arrived, a man fled on
foot and dropped a semi-automatic
rifle.
Later, at around 11:30, they say
a drive-by occured in the same area.
Three people were taken to the
hospital with minor injuries and have
been released.
Police have arrested and charged
20 year old Thomas Lee Waller in the
crime, but they are still looking for
other people who were in the car.

County has left several dozen customers
without water and is holding up traffic
along Pepper's Ferry Road.

working on the break since this
morning.
They maintain that portion of the
water line.
It happened around 7 a-m and
flooded part of Route 114 and should be
fixed by three this afternoon.
The line supplies water to people
in Christiansburg, Blacksburg and
Montgomery County.
Part of the roadway was washed
out too.
That may take longer to repair.

Kennedy's being treated at Duke

Senator Edward Kennedy is in surgery --
to try to remove his cancerous brain
tumor.
He decided to use one of the country's
top neurosurgeons - at the Duke
University Medical Center in North
Carolina.. after consulting experts
around
the country..
The operation began around nine this
morning, and is expected to take about
6-hours.
If all goes well, Kennedy will
recuperate at Duke for about a week
before
returning to Massachusetts to begin
chemotherapy and radiation for a
malignant
glioma on the left side of his brain.
It's an especially lethal type of
tumor, diagnosed in about 9-thousand
Americans each year. Half of the
patients with this type of tumor --
die within a year.
But, Kennedy is determined to beat the
odds.

NEWS / CAPITOL HILL) - "In a statement,
the Massachusetts Democrat said -- when
he's done with his treatment -- he
looks forward to returning to work on
Capitol Hill."
Kennedy went on to say -- he's deeply
grateful to everyone who expressed
their
support and good wishes. The 76-year
old's tumor was diagnosed last month --
after he suffered a seizure at his
family's home on Cape Cod. He was
airlifted to Massachusetts General
Hospital for treatment -- the same
facility where he's scheduled to
undergo the next steps of his
treatment.

Embassy in Pakistan has reportedly
killed four people and injured dozens
of others.

The blast happened today at the
embassy in Islamabad.
Authorities say the blast echoed
through the city, and left
a crater over three feet deep in the
road.
An exterior wall of the embassy
collapsed-- but the structure itself is
still intact.
It was the second bombing targeting
foreigners in the Pakistani capital in
less than three months.

were involved in a fiery crash in
Orange County, Florida this morning.

killed..the accident also trapped two
other motorists in a burning car.
They say the wreck happened when a
vehicle crossed the roadway and
collided head-on with at least one car
during rush hour this morning.
That crash started a chain- reaction
of crashes.
State Troopers closed the road to
traffic, so they can investigate.

last night, when they caught her
allegedly buying crack cocaine in New
York.
Just four years ago, O'Neal wrote a
memoir detailing her long road to
sobriety.
Investigators have charged her with
criminal possession of a controlled
substance, and she's scheduled to be
arraigned today.
O'Neal is the daughter of actor Ryan
O'Neal and the ex-wife of tennis star
John McEnroe, with whom she has three
children.

A short time ago, the Board of
Directors of Wachovia Corporation
announced the removal Chief Executive
Officer Kennedy Thompson from his job.
Wachovia has lost more than half
its market value in the past year --
costing shareholders millions of
dollars.
Among other problems, Thompson
was blamed for buying into the
California real estate bubble only
months before it burst.
Wachovia shares were down sharply
in trading this morning.

As 19 year old Aaron West sifts
throught the job ads at Valley View
Mall, his hopes for getting hired grow
dim.

Center for Labor Market Studies at
Northeastern University, a little more
than 1/3rd of teens are likely to be
employed this summer.

Yves Saint Laurent died yesterday at
his home in Paris at the age of 71.

closed out their weekend at Salem
Memorial Stadium.

yesterday during the Indy Car race in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

At least one car was. Marco
Andretti and Ed Carpenter wrecked in
front of Vitor Meira.
Meira had no where to go and his car
became airborne and flew over the other
two.
Looking at it in slow motion, you
can tell how close this was to a
disaster.
The eventual winner of the race,
Ryan Briscoe, says he was so close to
the wreck he could see the underside of
Meira's car.
