Virginia.

So far flames have consumed about
30 thousand acres in and around the
Pocosin Puh-KOH-suhn Lakes National
Wildlife Refuge.
That's about 70 miles south of
Norfolk.
A spokesman said soil in the area
is full of peat, which burns easily and
will likely smolder for months.
High temperatures near the fire
this weekend are expected to teeter
around 100 degrees, creating ripe
conditions for the blaze to continue.

against Gretna. It's rare that we have
an all local final, but that was the
case with the Hawks and Highlanders.

graduation this morning to play for a
state ring, and that turned out to be
an excellent decision.
Clinging to a 1-nothing lead,
Gretna got some insurance in the 6th
inning. Nina Compton lays down the
perfect bunt, advancing Ceseley Haynes
to third base.
A few seconds later Haynes
would make her way home as the wild
pitch goes to the screen and the Hawks
led it 2-nothing as the umpire ruled
she got under the tag of Meredith
Buckley.
Gretna gave Glenvar some
chances to get back in the game by
making a handful of fielding errors.
But the Highlanders could not take
advantage of their opportunities.
Two runs were plenty for Dalton
in the circle. She pitched her second
two hitter in as many days, striking
out 13 Glenvar batters.

0 strikeouts and the Hawks make front

But the Spartans set the tone in
the top of the first. Hailey Johnson
hits one to the fence in centerfield.
First baseman Carla Powell will score
on the play as she slides in safely to
make it 2-nothing Broad Run after just
a half an inning.
The Spartans swing the bats as
well as any team in the state. They
manufactured two more runs with some
clutch hitting and some heads up base
running.

Powhatan opened the game with a
bang. Two of the first three batters
hit solo homeruns off of Alleghany ace
Ryan Kessinger, and it was 2-nothing
Powhatan after an inning.
In the top of the 3rd,
Alleghany got those two back to even
things up. Steven Keener, who is
headed to Liberty University in the
fall, drives in Kessinger with the RBI
to right.
But the 4th inning would prove
to be the downfall for the Mountaineers
as Powhatan got four runs in the frame.
Will Dinghus delivers an RBI as the
lead grew to 6-2.
The never say die Mounties who
battled from behind throughout the
playoffs got two more runs right here.
Keener drives in Kessinger again.

game's first goal when Brian Flynn
takes the pass and scores from inside
the box. And it was 1-nil Radford.
Then later off the corner kick,
Alex Khandan-Barani comes sliding in to
score the goal and just like that it
was 2-nothing.
Galax's chances took a big hit
when Dio Rodriguez left the game with
an injury.

2nd tally of the game on the rebound

Radford's boys were after a
team championship and state singles
champ Malik Mubeen was leading the way
as the Bobcats took on Gate City.
Radford played well all day
long, but came out on the short end of
the stick, losing by a 5 to 3 final.
Northside's head coach Sam
Foster was understandably excited
because his girls doubles team of
Rachel Fertita and Ashley Masterson
took on the team from James Wood.
But the Vikings duo
struggled to stay in it. They
eventually fell in straight sets by a
final of 6-2 and 6-1.
