Just after nine o'clock last
night - a Ford pickup truck hit a
Norfolk Southern caboose.
It happened at a train crossing on
Indiana Street, not far from the Old
Valleydale Packaging Plant.
Rescue crews had to remove the roof,
and then pull the doors open to get the
two victims out.
The driver, 53-year-old Edward Daniel
Light is charged with driving under the
influence.
Both he and a female passenger
were taken to the hospital with non
life threatening injuries.

trying to steal copper from the YWCA in
Danville.
They say around midnight, 39 year
old Tyrone Broadnax of Danville broke
into the Y on Main Street, and cut
several copper pipes using a hacksaw.
Broadnax was charged with
breaking and entering with intent to
commit larceny, and possesion of
burglary tools.

fired a two and a half-inch nail into

George Chandler and a friend were
nailing up boards for an outdoor
lattice on Friday, when the nail gun

ABB will hire 127 new people to
build transformers like this at the
company's plant in South Boston.
Jobs that could have gone to
countries like Brazil.
Milt Axton/ABB General Manager:
"We're very pleased to be adding
manufacturing jobs at a time when
people are outsourcing to other
countries."
But that decision came thanks to
your tax dollars - used in the form of
state grants, that helped pay for
construction of ABB's new facility.
This building, and the land it
sits on, is actually owned by Halifax
County. They bought it to sweeten the
deal with ABB and convince them to keep
their jobs here. The county will make
its money back over the next ten years
by leasing the property to ABB.
The county invested more than 15
million dollars to make the project
happen - money, they say, was well
spent.
Patsy Vaughan: "These are higher
paying, more technical jobs than some
of the other jobs in our community."
and now that those jobs are here.

Police say alcohol was a factor
in the accident.

last night at a train crossing on
Indiana Street, not far from the Old
Valleydale Packaging Plant.
Rescue crews had to remove the roof
and then pull the doors open to get the
two victims out.

Officials say residents should be ready
to evacuate as the river threatens to
spill over its banks and surge into
town.
Nearby Waterloo is already swamped. The
fast-moving water swept away this
railroad bridge and submerged the
entire downtown area.

It's the same story along the White
River in Indiana. National Guard
units
are trying to hold it back with
sandbags and concrete barriers, leaving
residents little choice but to watch,
wait, and hope.
But for many - the damage has already
been done. Thousands have been forced
from their homes all across the region
as rising rivers prove too tall....for

vine, and are not among fresh tomatoes
being pulled from grocery store shelves
and restaurants because of a salmonella
scare.
That, as federal officials say they're
getting closer to pinpointing the
source of the outbreak, which has now
grown to at least 167 cases in 17
states.
The one in our region was
reported in April.

when a train and truck collided in
Salem.

night - a Ford pickup truck hit a
Norfolk Southern caboose.
It happened at a train crossing on
Indiana Street, not far from the Old
Valleydale Packaging Plant.
Rescue crews had to remove the roof
and then pull the doors open to get the
two victims out.
The driver, 53-year-old Edward Daniel
Light is charged with driving under the
influence.
Both he and a female passenger
were taken to the hospital with non

fired a two and a half-inch nail into
the top of his head while working on a
backyard project...
George Chandler and a friend were

lattice on Friday, when the nail gun
