deadly flood waters that have ravaged
the Midwest all week.
While residents in Indiana and
Wisconsin are cleaning up...people
along the Iowa's Cedar River are
bracing for what's to come.
Manuel Gallegus has the latest from
Waterloo, Iowa.

(END SOT) The raging Cedar River is threatening
town after town in Iowa. And Cedar
Rapids is next in line. City officials
have evacuated some 200 residents while
volunteers fill sandbags. More rain in
the forecast... is not going to help.

In Cedar Falls, it appears the sandbags
have held. Overnight the river topped
102 feet, but a spokesperson says
downtown did not flood.

In neighboring Waterloo, the river did
spill over. It took out a railway
bridge and forced officials to close
down the city and five other bridges.
Dozens of homes and farms are now under
water.

Here in Waterloo, you can see just how
high the Cedar River has risen. This
morning it was 26 feet high...that's 18
feet higher than normal.

In Indiana much of the water has
receded and thousands are now cleaning
up
after the worst flooding this state has
seen in decades. in hard hit
Columbus , Mae Hawkins is trying to
piece together her life.

Corn farmers also suffered heavy crop
loses that will eventually be felt by
consumers across the nation.
and now, as rivers crest farther
downstream across much of the midwest,
many
fear the worst devastation is still to

thought to be FAR higher...officials in
Sudan now say 29 people were killed in
a plane crash last night.

remaining 171 people on the plane HAVE
been accounted for.
The Sudan Airways Airbus 310 landed
in a storm at Khartoum airport, before
bursting into flames.
Passengers fled the aircraft-- many

making initial casualty counts
difficult.
There's no word yet on what caused
the accident.

sheriff's deputy was justified when he
shot a man last month.
That's the finding of
Christiansburg police and the
Montgomery County Commonwealth's
Attorney.
Sergeant Lewis Heslip was
trying to serve a warrant on Donald E.
Lovern.
Lovern came at the deputy with a
knife, and Heslip shot him in the leg.
Heslip has been a deputy for
ten years and is on the county tactical
team.

train and truck collided in Salem last
night.

Just after nine o'clock a Ford
pickup truck hit a Norfolk Southern
caboose.
It happened at a train crossing on
Indiana Street, not far from the Old
Valleydale Packaging Plant.
Rescue crews had to remove the roof,
and then pull the doors open to get the
two victims out.
The driver, 53-year-old Edward
Daniel Light is charged with driving
under the influence.
Both he and a female passenger
were taken to the hospital-- but are
expected to be okay.

ownership to the equity firm of Boston
Ventures.
Under the deal announced today,
NASCAR's most storied race team gives
up control of an organization that has
been family run since 19-49.
Barry Baker, managing director of
Boston Ventures, becomes Petty's new
chairman, and David Zucker takes over
as CEO.
Zucker most recently ran Midway
Games, a Chicago- based producer of
video games.
The partnership gave Petty the
stability it needed to retain Bobby
Labonte, who signed a four-year
contract extension after Boston
Ventures came aboard.

In an announcement released this
morning, Claire Collins said she is
resigning at the end of the month.
Collins has served as the City Manager
for a little over two years.
Before that she served as County

a blood-clotting product developed by
Virginia Commonwealth University
researchers. Woundstat can be used to
treat major battlefield wounds.

means military branches can use the
product, which is a mixture of minerals
that stops heavy bleeding when
applied to wounds.
According to an Army study, major
blood loss is responsible for nearly
half of battlefield deaths.
The company that makes Woundstat
says it has received orders from forces
preparing to deploy to Iraq and
Afghanistan, along with battalions in
the field.

them on' and 'dead or alive' indicated
that he was not a 'man of peace.'

two major conflicts, he's hoping to
leave a legacy of peace, and make the
job of world leader a little easier for
the next President.
He's already said one of this top
priorities is to resolve the standoff

Iran before his presidency ends.

to privatize the Civic Center.

gave firefighters a bit of a break
overnight... but forecasters warn wind
gusts could whip up the wildfires again
today.

firefighter severely burned.
Most fires are concentrated in areas
