body of a man in the James River
between Big Island and Glasgow.
They've been searching since at
least 4:30 this afternoon.

died this morning when his car ran off
the road and hit a tree.
The accident - around 2:30 AM on
Route 6-26.
The driver, William Sowers from
Florida, died a few hours later at the
hospital.
Three others were in the car with
him.
They were taken to Lynchburg
General Hospital.

today about how a murder suspect
committed suicide under their watch
this weekend.

Authorities say Brian Sheppard
hanged himself inside his cell
yesterday.
The inmate was supposed to go to
court later this week for a preliminary
hearing.
He was accused of killing a man
outside a Food Lion in Salem two months
ago.
News 7 spoke with one of
Sheppard's childhood friend over the
phone this afternoon.

jail guards.
At 10 o-clock yesterday morning,
a medic gave Sheppard his daily meds.
But at this point, investigators

Authorities say Rodney Lamont
France shot at two men at least eight
times while they were sitting in their
car at the Rivermont Apartments on West
Fayette Street.
The men got away and so did
France.
Officers say the 25-year-old took
off in a green older model Mitsubishi.

Morva was found guilty on three
counts of capital murder.
It took that same Abingdon jury
about three hours to decide William
Morva's fate- he grinned as his
sentence was read.

emotion.
Morva's capital murder case was
moved to Abingdon because there were
too many close ties to the case in
Montgomery County.
Morva killed hospital security
guard Derrick McFarland and Montgomery
County Sheriff's deputy Corporal Eric
Sutphin in August 2006 after escaping
police custody at Montgomery Regional
Hospital.
On top of his death sentence the
jury gave Morva five years for escape,
five years for assault and battery of a
police officer and additional years for
firearms charges.

off the bridge that goes over the James
River in the Snowden area.
They made several successful
dives before one man did not reappear
after a jump.
Crews found his body around 5:30.

expected to largely reach its high
point today, cresting at several spots
north of St. Louis.
Rivers should start to recede in

They're battling another element
in California, where lightning has
sparked more than 500 wildfires.
One fire in particular has
destroyed one home, caused but dozens
have had to evacuate, and the fire's
threatening more than 100 buildings.

Caldwell Mountain in Botetourt County
will get to go home tonight.

maintenance.

court where the Roanoke Valley
Invitational Tournament wrapped up
another successful run today.
The 81st tourney crowned
champions in more than 40 divisions,
but the weather played a little havoc
with the Sunday schedule.
The men's open division singles
final featured two players that know
plenty about each other--Albert
Larregola and Ignaci Roca, both of whom
finished up their eligibility at Tech
this past spring.

and the top two seeds to be moved from
Hollins indoors to Sun Tennis off
Starkey Road.
Roca, who will play for Costa
Rica in next month's Davis Cup matches
took the first set from Larregola 7-5.
But Larregola was seeded number
one for a reason and he rallied to win
the next two sets rather easily 6-3 and
6-1 over Roca.
