It may be an inconvenience to drive
around these road crews, but seeing
them in your neighborhood makes for a
smoother ride.
This year, more than a dozen streets in
Roanoke won't get paved, including the
Irvin Cook's road.
Irvin Cook/resident 29:57-07" IT'S
PRETTY ROUGH, LIKE I SAID, YOU BOUNCE
EVERYWHERE, STUFF LIKE THAT, IT'S HARD

The price of fuel and oil are forcing
the slow-down.
Mark Jamison/City " We are seeing a
significant increase in the cost, about
50 percent, over the cost per ton of
asphalt on the price over last year."
Oil and diesel are necessary
ingredients in making asphalt. 1 ton of
aspalt costs about 600 dollars.
Rich Jameson/Adams Construction "SAY
YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT A 20 TON LOAD OF
ASPALT, THAT'S 80 DOLLARS WORTH OF
FUEL, JUST FOR THAT LOAD OF HOT MIXED
ASPHALT."
Roanoke city allocated 3-point 5
million dollars for this year's
repairs.
Fixing a one lane stretch for a mile
costs at least 60 thousand dollars.
By late fall, the uneven pavement
and cracks like these on Williamson
Road should be patched.
Forest Hill is not on the list of
roads to be paved. According Roanoke
City, 28 PERCENT OF THEIR ANTICIPATED
ROAD PROJECTS will be put on hold till
the next fiscal year..
Mark Jamison/City "ULTIMATELY ITS
