Morva was found guilty on three
counts of capital murder.
It took that same Abingdon jury
about three hours to decide William
Morva's fate- he grinned as his
sentence was read.

The courtroom was filled with
emotion.
Morva's capital murder case was
moved to Abingdon because there were
too many close ties to the case in
Montgomery County.
Morva killed hospital security
guard Derrick McFarland and Montgomery
County Sheriff's deputy Corporal Eric
Sutphin in August 2006 after escaping
police custody at Montgomery Regional
Hospital.
On top of his death sentence the
jury gave Morva five years for escape,
five years for assault and battery of a
police officer and additional years for
firearms charges.

murder-suspect killed himself under
their watch.

killing a man outside a Food Lion in
Salem in April.
Deputies at the Roanoke County
Jail said on Saturday he hanged himself
inside his jail cell with shoe laces.
Sheppard was NOT on suicide

Amherst County quickly turned bad.

friends was diving off a pedestrian
bridge that crosses the James River
between Big Island and Glasgow
yesterday.
One of the men leaped into the
water and never came up.
Rescue crews from Big Island,
Moneta, and Smith Mountain Lake started
searching for him around at around
4:30.
They found his body about an hour
later with the help of this underwater
video camera.

failure last night in California.
Carlin had a history of heart
trouble, and a publicist says the comic
went to the hospital yesterday
afternoon, complaining of chest pains..
He was known for pushing the
envelope with his ideas...and his
language.
Just Tuesday, it was announced that
Carlin was being awarded the 11th
annual Mark Twain Prize for American
Humor.
He recently performed here locally at
the Roanoke Civic Center.

Montgomery County for sentencing today.

Formal sentencing is set for 9:00

Amherst County quickly turned bad.

Authorities say a group of
friends was diving off a pedestrian
bridge that crosses the James River
between Big Island and Glasgow
yesterday.
One of the men leaped into the
water and never came up.
Rescue crews from Big Island,
Moneta, and Smith Mountain Lake started
searching for him around at around
4:30.
They found his body about an hour
later with the help of this underwater
video camera.

drugs.

abuse - such as powerful painkillers -
must be sold with a written
prescription.
Under the new rule, doctors could
prescribe the restricted medications by
e-mail, but it's not yet clear which
drugs would apply.

hormone called leptin that helps the
brain resist tempting foods may explain
why people who lose weight often have a
hard time keeping it off.
Restoring the hormone to pre-diet
levels may reverse this problem...Work
is already underway to determine if
some kind of supplement is possible.

The world is far from prepared for a
flu pandemic.
That warning from infectious disease
experts who predict the bird flu could
kill millions if it becomes easily
transmissible among people.

Amherst County quickly turned bad.

Authorities say a group of
friends was diving off a pedestrian
bridge that crosses the James River
between Big Island and Glasgow
yesterday.
One of the men leaped into the
water and never came up.
Rescue crews from Big Island,
Moneta, and Smith Mountain Lake started
searching for him around at around
4:30.
They found his body about an hour
later with the help of this underwater
video camera.

It took that same Abingdon jury
about three hours to decide William
Morva's fate- he grinned as his
sentence was read.

Morva's capital murder case was
moved to Abingdon because there were
too many close ties to the case in
Montgomery County.
Morva killed hospital security

Sutphin in August 2006 after escaping
police custody at Montgomery Regional
Hospital.
On top of his death sentence the
jury gave Morva five years for escape,
five years for assault and battery of a
police officer and additional years for
firearms charges.

for a man wanted for attempted murder.
Authorities say Rodney Lamont
France shot at two men at least eight
times while they were sitting in their
car at the Rivermont Apartments on West
Fayette Street.
The men got away and so did
France.
Officers say the 25-year-old took

failure last night in California.
Carlin had a history of heart
trouble, and a publicist says the comic
went to the hospital yesterday
afternoon, complaining of chest pain..
He was known for pushing the

Just Tuesday, it was announced that
Carlin was being awarded the 11th
annual Mark Twain Prize for American
Humor.
He recently performed here locally at
the Roanoke Civic Center.

on edge..as the Mississippi begins
cresting in some Illinois and Missouri
towns, but still rising in others.

Workers are still trying to secure
levees along the Mississippi River.
The Minnesota National Guard has been

The White House expected more from an
overseas decision on oilm and now
Presidential candidates are offering
THEIR solutions to reduce the price to
fill up the tank.

Gas has hit yet ANOTHER record - a
gallon of self-serve regular now
averages
4-dollars-and-ten-cents nationwide.
That's up a dime in the past 2 weeks
and
more than a dollar in the last year.
And there's little reason to be
optimistic.
There HAD been hope an emergency
meeting held in Saudi Arabia yesterday
would
do SOMETHING to slow run-away oil
costs....but the summit closed with
just a
modest pledge to increase
production...2-hundred-thousand barrels
a day...a
mere drop in the bucket.

IMMEDIATE RELIEF TO THE CONSUMER."
The Saudi position - it's not supply
and demand that's the problem. They
blame market speculators for driving
up the price and say there's not much
they can do.

As frustration grows, gas is shaping up
as a MAJOR issue on the campaign trail.
Both candidates agree things have to
change...but that's about all they
agree
on. John McCain wants to open up
off-shore drilling, Barack Obama
opposes it.
Obama wants to levy big taxes on big
oil...McCain disagrees. McCain
suggests a gas tax holiday for much of
the summer, Obama calls that a
gimmick.

But John McCain's ready to test-drive a
new idea. Later today, he'll propose
a 300-million-dollar government prize
to whomever can develop a car battery
that far surpasses current technology.

Police are investigating a shooting
that happened this morning in
Martinsville.
Dispatchers say it occurred
around 1:30 on Colony Trace Drive in
the Villa Heights area.

Montgomery County today for sentencing.
A jury recommended the death
penalty after Morva was found guilty on
three counts of capital murder.
Morva killed a hospital security
guard and a sheriff's deputy nearly two
years ago after escaping custody at
Montgomery Regional Hospital.

A cyclist is in the hospital with
minor injuries after being hit by a car
in Botetourt County.
The car was going south on Route 11
