accused of killing a Roanoke shopkeeper
a year and a half ago during an
attempted robbery.
This morning the jury heard from the
arresting officer and an evidence
technician.
The trial was delayed in getting
started last week.
This is the first full day of
testimony.
Killingsworth is charged with killing
Zaid Alama- jali, a Jordanian immigrant
who operated the Z-Mart on Melrose
Avenue for more than decade.

apparently drowned in Amherst County
yesterday.

friends was diving off a pedestrian
bridge that crosses the James River
between Big Island and Glasgow.
One of the men leaped into the
water and never came back up.
Rescue crews from Big Island,
Moneta, and Smith Mountain Lake started
searching for him at around 4:30.
Officials won't release the name
of the victim until they can tell his
family first.

Philippines.

failure last night at the age of 71.
The 9th grade dropout made a career
out of edgy, adult humor, and even went
to the nation's highest court for the

was often irreverent and
inflammatory,
a combination that made millions
laugh for decades.

Carlin looked at the world around him
and made fun of it....taking on
everyone
and everything.

In the 70's, Carlin came up with the
7 dirty words you can never say on
television.

beep, beep, beep."
When those words were later played on a
radio station, the case went to the
supreme court which ruled the routine
indecent. Later, Carlin would say he
was perversely proud his name was a
footnote in American legal history.

Carlin's career began in th 60's and
he evolved with the times...growing
his hair longer and embracing a
renegade image. In 1975, he was the
first
host of Saturday Night Live.

everyone, but he was often recognized

Sheppard hanged himself inside his cell
on Saturday.
Sheppard was supposed to go to
court later this week.
He was accused of killing a man
outside a Food Lion in Salem two months
ago.

Tim Kaine will address a joint session
of the legislature.
He's trying to convince lawmakers
to approve more spending for road
projects and maintenance.

There are several ideas on the
table...
One legislator wants to replace
the 17- and- a- half cent gas- tax with
a five- percent sales tax.
Governor Tim Kaine's plan calls
for increasing the sales- tax on
vehicle sales from three- percent to
four and upping the vehicle
registration fee by 10- dollars.
That money would be used for road
maintenance.
Going into today's session, the
only thing lawmakers agree on is that
there's no consensus.

GRAPHIC=Sprint Cup Sonoma Nascar drivers made news off the
track in Sonoma before the Toyota Save
Mart 350 even got started.
Multiple sources are reporting that
Mark Martin will leave Dale Earnhardt,
Incorporated at the end of the season
to replace Casey Mears at Hendrick
Motorsports.
Officials from each organization
denied the reports, but usually where
there's smoke there's fire. As for the
race itself,

spun around by Greg Biffle.
David Reutimann had worse
trouble than that-- blowing a tire and
slamming straight into the tire barrier
to bring out another caution.
Late in the race, Kevin
Harvick caused a mess that took him,
Tony Stewart, and Jamie McMurray out.
Kyle Busch avoided all the
trouble, getting past Juan Pablo
Montoya on a restart and cruising to
his series- leading 5th win this
season, and his first- ever career
victory on a road course.

champions.
In the men's open division
singles final, former Virginia Tech
teammates Albert Larregola and Ignaci
Roca squared off for the trophy.

and the top two seeds to be moved from
Hollins indoors to Sun Tennis off
Starkey Road.
Roca, who will play for Costa
Rica in next month's Davis Cup matches
took the first set from Larregola 7-5.
But Larregola was seeded number
one for a reason, and he rallied to win
the next two sets rather easily, 6-3
and 6-1 over Roca.
