The U-S Supreme Court made a
landmark decision-- the first time in

the Second Amendment--

(END SOT) The high Court's ruling cements an

individual's right to keep a handgun at
home and for hunting.

ALAN GURA/PETITIONER'S ATTORNEY:: "WHEN
THE GOVERNMENT REGULATES GUNS, IT HAS
TO REMEMBER THAT IT IS POTENTIALLY
STEPPING ON AN IMPORTANT INDIVIDUAL
RIGHT, AND IT'S GOING TO BE MADE TO
RESPECT THAT RIGHT."

The case revolved around the District
of Columbia's 32-year ban on handguns
but it has consequences for the entire
country.

It's the first time the U-S Supreme
Court has taken on the second
amendment, declaring an individual does
NOT have to be part of a militia or
other organized group to own a weapon
for home protection.

GILLIAN ST. LAWRENCE/GUN OWNER):
"CRIMINALS WILL NOW KNOW THAT IF THEY
BREAK INTO A HOME ARMED, THEY HAVE TO
LOOK OUT FOR A HOME-OWNER THAT HAS
EXERCISED THEIR RIGHT."

Susan Roberts/Washington D.C.

NONE OF THIS MEANS THE RIGHT TO OWN A
GUN IS UNLIMITED. THE RULING SHOULDN'T

AFFECT MOST FEDERAL FIRE-ARMS
RESTRICTIONS....

But with Washington's murder rate among
the highest in the nation, the mayor
still feels s strict ban is necessry.

(:52-:57 SOT: MAYOR ADRIAN

FENTY/D-DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA): "MORE
HANDGUNS IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
WILL ONLY LEAD TO MORE HANDGUN
VIOLENCE."

The decision is likely to spark a
flurry of challenges to restrictions
across the country but many gun-control
supporters believe the Justices left
plenty of room for common-sense laws.

PAUL HELMNKE/PRESIDENT, BRADY CAMPAIGN
TO PREVENT VIOLENCE): "THEY SAID YOU
CAN NO LONGER HAVE NEAR-TOTAL
PROHIBITIONS ON GUNS. BUT THEY ALSO
SAID YOU CAN HAVE REASONABLE
RESTRICTIONS ON GUNS."

It's a fight that's far from over on
the state level, even though the
nation's highest court has had its say.

Sharapova was dispatched by the 154th
ranked player in the world, fellow
Russian Alla Kudryavtseva 6-2, 6-4 in
second-round play. Sharapova's game
was a mess with ugly double faults and
plenty of unforced errors. It's her
earliest exit from a Grand Slam since
her first full season on Tour in 2003.

jjadhon@wdbj7.com Finally today, we have a story that
will make you want to clean out your

basement.

CHANNEL=A VO-NAT

VO-NAT Someone donated this picture to a

Goodwill store in Easton, Maryland.

They probably didn't realize it was
worth more than 40 thousand dollars.

The Paris Street scene is by French
impressionist Edouard-Leon Cortes. It
was discovered in the back of the
Goodwill store.

The assistant manager says workers
noticed the painting was signed and
looked it up on the Internet.

Goodwill executives took it to an
art gallery, which suggested they
auction it off at Sotheby's in New York
City.

Somebody paid it 40-thousand-625
dollars for it.
