(END SOT) The U.S. Supreme Court says americans
can own handguns for self-defense.
In a 5 to 4 landmark decision the
justices struck down the District of
Columbia's law banning residents from
owning handguns.
This is the first definitive ruling
from the High Court on gun rights -- in
U.S history
(STANDUP BRIDGE: Susan Roberts / CBS
NEWS / THE SUPREME COURT) - "This case
got right down to the heart of the
second amendment and whether it
protects
the rights of individuals to own guns
for private uses -- or, whether that
right is tied to service in the
militia."
Justice Scalia wrote the majority
opinion saying -- the amendment
protects an
individual right to own a firearm, and
use it for traditionally lawful
purposes, like self-defense - within
the home.
With Washington's murder rate among the
highest in the nation, The D-C city
council banned handguns in 1976,
arguing that they have no legitimate
use in
the urban environment. The City's
attorneys argued, the ban was
constitutional -- because it only
limited the choice of firearms
residents
could own.
But, in the end -- the high court
struck down the city's ban... A ruling
that
is now likely to call into question gun
control laws across the country.

GRAPHIC=River Course The River Course down in the New
River Valley opened up after
renovations by Pete Dye in 2-thousand

With a new lengthened and
improved Golf Course, the plan was for
N-C-A-A Tournaments and Professional
Golf Tournaments to come to the River
Course.
As Travis Wells tells us, the
first part of the plan has been

for the Tarheel Tour, a developmental
circuit for aspiring PGA Tour hopefuls.
This week's event in the New River
Valley is the 11th of 20 on the
schedule, which also includes dates in
North and South Carolina. 120 players
teed it up, each with a story to tell
and the same goal, reaching the next
level in a game where every shot
matters and success can be fleeting.

event hosted by the River Course, but
hopefully not the last.

Fargis is also competing in a
number of different events this week,
including the Horse Show's Finale-- the
50-Thousand- Dollar Grand Prix. And
while winning would be fantastic, these
days the 60 year old is more focused on
teaching and coaching.
