"I ONLY DRIVE ON THE WEEKENDS. TODAY'S
AN EXCEPTION"
Oil prices hit yet another record
today: $143 dollars a barrel...and
drivers are paying an average of $4.09
for a gallon of gas. A new poll
shows... nine out of ten Americans
expect those prices to hurt them
financially - half are bracing for
hardship over next six months.
Josh Silber: :29- :33"YOU EITHER DECIDE

Kathryn Brown/New York, NY: :36- :45
AS GAS PRICES KEEP HITTING RECORDS,
MORE PEOPLE ARE DITCHING THEIR CARS AND
HOPPING ON THE BUS. BUT IN SOME
PLACES...PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION ISN'T AN
OPTION...
Some drivers are going to great lengths
to get a deal at the pump. In
Lafayette, Louisana drivers got in line
at five in the morning to take
advantage of car dealership promotion:
gasoline for 99 cents a gallon. With a
ten gallon maximum... drivers saved
about thirty dollars.
Chris Mitchell 01:05-01:09 "WELL,
BASICALLY I'M GOING TO USE THAT 30
DOLLARS TO BUY SOME FOOD, MAYBE DO A
BACKYARD BBQ YOU KNOW."
Many people are canceling their summer
travel plans and staying home... and
cutting corners. Two-thirds of
Americans now consider fuel costs their
top issue... over the economy,
healthcare, and the war in Iraq. And
experts say... we could see five dollar
a gallon gasoline by the end of the
year.

THOUSANDS OF HEARTS A YEAR. THE BEST

SCANS.
BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY'RE THE MOST
USEFUL.
(Dr. Stephen Siegel/Cardiologist) I
don't have any patient in whose case
the CT scan made any difference in
saving someone's life
A CT SCAN CREATES AN IMAGE OF A BEATING
HEART BY COMBINING A SERIES OF X-RAYS.
THEY GIVE DOCTORS A CLEAR LOOK AT A
PATIENT'S ARTERIES...WHICH IS USEFUL
WHEN HEART DISEASE IS SUSPECTED. BUT IF
THERE'S NO SIGN OF TROUBLE...
(sot)...why get the information if
you're not going to do anything with it
A SCAN ALSO EXPOSES PATIENTS TO LARGE
DOSES OF RADIATION AND IT CAN COST UP
TO 2-THOUSAND DOLLARS. A LOT OF MONEY,
CONSIDERING THERE ARE NO STUDIES
PROVING THEY'RE BETTER THAN OLDER
SCREENING METHODS, WHICH START WITH
BLOOD WORK-UPS AND STRESS TESTS.
(Dr. Sean Kenniff/bridge) Even without
that evidence, more hospitals are
investing in the technology. Doctors
have CT-scanned hundreds of thousands
of patients..and the medical world
expects that number to skyrocket over
the next decade.
WORLD CLASS HOSPITALS NEED TO KEEP UP
WITH THE MOST MODERN EQUIPMENT. BUT
EACH MACHINE COSTS AROUND A MILLION
DOLLARS. AND SOME SAY THAT COULD BE AN
INCENTIVE TO USE SCANS EVEN WHEN
THEY'RE NOT REALLY NEEDED..LIKE FOR
GENERAL SCREENINGS.
(sot siegel) it's a new technology.
It's a wonderful test, the question is
we have to find the best applications
for it
AS ALWAYS, PREVENTION IS THE BEST CURE.
KEEP YOURSELF IN SHAPE, EAT WELL, AND

CHANNEL= A VO NAT
VO NAT North Pole Ice is melting at the
highest rate ever recorded. About 70%
of the sea ice that's left is very thin
ice that formed over the winter.
Scientists predict that at the current
rate , most if not all of it - will
melt completely by the end of the
summer.
The disappearance of the Arctic
sea ice, would make it possible to
reach the North Pole by ship.
The polar regions are
experiencing the most dramatic increase
in average temperatures because as more
sea ice is lost, the darker, open ocean
will absorb more heat and raise local
temperatures even more.

Sunday Kurt Busch, not Kyle Busch was
the winner at New Hampshire. It was
Kurt's first win since last September
and the 18th of his career.
He went to victory lane thanks to
staying out under a late caution and
winding up on the point when the race
was called due to rain 17 laps short of
it's scheduled distance.

on the sun!
They're gearing up a solar car
for a big race.
The project has been in the works
for two years.
The car is built light for speed,
and only has three wheels.
It can go highway speeds... but
it goes slower if it's cloudy outside.
They'll race 24-hundred miles
against other solar-powered cars later
this summer.
