native, Timothy Saunders.
He was just one of 17 sailors
killed when terrorists attacked the

The Pentagon now says it has the
mastermind in custody and that Abd
al-Rahim al-Nashiri (ob-duh,
ahl-rah-heem ahl-nah-sheer-ee) will be
charged.

back at work after they were forced to
shoot and kill a man.

deadly force against Brian Long of
Hurt.
It happened May 12.
Investigators say Long came at
the officers with a shotgun.

shot him.
The two officers were placed on
administrative leave.
Altavista's police chief says
they are now back on the force.

OQ=NEWS 7, CAMPBELL COUNTY. << Every year, the calm waters of
(END SOT) the Staunton River become a playground
for thousands.
Philip Shotwell: "It's anywhere
from 1,500 and 2,000. At least that
many of the river."
They travel in boats, innertubes,
anything that stays above water - for
the annual Fun Float - a fundraiser for
the Long Island Ruritan Club.
It was in these waters that Fun
Float turned deadly when Investigators
say Jerry Conner, Junior fell out of
his canoe and drowned.
His body was found Sunday
morning.
Shotwell: "I just couldn't
believe it. Because over the years
we've had a good record."
Philip Shotwell helped organized
Fun Float.
He says in the 32 years they've
held the event, no one has ever died.
Shotwell "We've been lucky. It's
never been anything like this before."
Everyone that participates in Fun
Float is given a flyer like this. On
it, there's a paragraph reminding all
boaters they must have a coast guard
approved life preserver on board. All
other floaters are encouraged to have
some kind of personal floatation device
with them. Still, with so many
floaters in the water, the Ruritans say
this is not a rule they can enforce.
Shotwell: "We have no control
over who goes down the river."
But game wardens do have control.
This weekend, they issued 49
citations to people without a life
jacket.
Shotwell says participants should
know the rules.
Shotwell: "Once they leave here,
we have nothing to do with it."
and the liability rests with
anyone who decides to get in the water.

emergency brain surgery this weekend
after an accident at Smith Mountain
Lake.
Today he's in stable condition at
Roanoke Memorial.
Authorities say the boy's father
was on a jet ski dragging his son who
was knee boarding behind him.
The dad made a wide turn and the
boy crashed into a dock.
The accident happened Saturday
afternoon at Beavers Dam Creek on the
Bedford side of the lake.

sent two people to the hospital in
Roanoke County this afternoon.

The motorcycle overturned, and
apparently hit the guard rail.
There's no word on the condition

tomorrow requires Virginia's circuit
court clerks put land records online.
That can include divorce decrees
and certain financial information that,
in some cases, includes social security
numbers and signatures.

B-J Ostergren (Oster- green) says
that violates her right to free speech.
Her website, Virginia Watchdog-

She uses those documents to make
the point that putting sensitive
information online is dangerous.

It was found at the Boxley quarry

just yet. A large upper low is
meandering across the New England
states. As it moves east, several
disturbances will pass over the region
this evening bringing scattered showers
and storms. The best chance of seeing a
storm will be in the mountains, where
gusty winds and small hail also
possible. An area of high pressure
will usher in drier and more tranquil
weather from Tuesday through late in
the week. Afternoon highs will range
from low 80s Tuesday, to mid 80s by
Friday. Another cold front will
approach the region by the Independance
day (Friday) and into the weekend, with
more scattered showers and storms
possible. Long-range models have these
hit-or-miss variety, so the holiday
weekend shouldn't be a washout. MONDAY

oldest track on the circuit is getting
a bit of a makeover this summer.
