(END SOT) It's sounding more and more like an

alarm every day.

U-S stocks will start the second half
of the year staring into the jaws of a

bear market. Since its high in
October, the Dow is down nearly
20-percent.

Just last week, it gave up more than
500 points...Billions of dollars up in

smoke daily.

(SOT GARY SCHATSKY/FINANCIAL PLANNER):

"THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE THE MOST TO WORRY

ABOUT IN THIS DROP ARE PEOPLE THAT ARE
WAY OVER-EXPOSED TO STOCKS."

For decades millions have been putting
more than just their trust in the

market. Chris and Val Cichorek have
nearly everything tied up in stocks.

(SOT CHRIS CICHOREK/STOCK HOLDER):

"BETWEEN OUR INVESTMENTS, OUR STOCK

PORTFOLIO, 401K, STOCK OPTIONS, ALL
THAT STUFF - WE TOOK ABOUT A 25-PERCENT

HIT."

Like many Americans, they're stuck.
They can't afford to sell the slumping

stocks, but they also can't afford to
lose more day after day.

(SOT CHRIS CICHOREK/STOCK HOLDER): "WE

WORKED REALLY HARD AND SAVED UP QUITE A

BIT...IT'S LIKE A PUNCH IN THE GUT."

It's just part of a combination that
giving the economy a beating.

Inflation's becoming a major threat,
the price of oil has gas at record

prices, and the housing market
continues to stall.

Consumer spending IS up, largely due to
those tax rebate checks...But that's

about the only bright spot in a
financial storm that seems to darken
every

day.

No matter how much you weigh, having a

A new study's confirmed the way fat is
distributed in the body - especially at

the waistline - may be even more
important than how much weight a person
is carrying.

While the danger of abdominal fat is
becoming clear, experts don't fully
understand why a big stomach is
unhealthy, even among people who weigh
pretty much what they should.

(wipevo)

Routine brain scans in a group of
middle-aged people show that 10-percent
of them have suffered a stroke without
knowing it.

And people with the most common type of
irregular heartbeat had more than twice
that rate.

These so-called silent strokes usually
don't result in any injuries but do
raise the risk for a major stroke that
can do a lot of damage.

(wipevo)

Older adults with low vitamin B levels
appear to be at increased risk of
suffering a hip fracture.

Doctors say diet changes and
supplements are an easy way to make
sure you're getting enough of this

important ingredient.

No matter how much you weigh, having a
big belly could be hazardous to your
health.

(vo)

A new study's confirmed the way fat is
distributed in the body - especially at
the waistline - may be even more
important than how much weight a person
is carrying.

While the danger of abdominal fat is
becoming clear, experts don't fully
understand why a big stomach is
unhealthy, even among people who weigh
pretty much what they should.

(wipevo)

Routine brain scans in a group of
middle-aged people show that 10-percent
of them have suffered a stroke without
knowing it.

And people with the most common type of
irregular heartbeat had more than twice
that rate.

These so-called silent strokes usually
don't result in any injuries but do
raise the risk for a major stroke that
can do a lot of damage.

(wipevo)

Older adults with low vitamin B levels
appear to be at increased risk of
suffering a hip fracture.

Doctors say diet changes and
supplements are an easy way to make
sure you're getting enough of this
important ingredient.

Those are some of today's top medical
stories.

Firefighters in Northern California are
making progress on the biggest
fires...and no new ones are reported.

But there's a threat of more dry
lightning today.

Meanwhile, NASA is helping
firefighters keep track of the flames
by using remote sensing to detect new
fires.
