A shooting in the middle of the
afternoon at a Southeast Roanoke drug
store.
One person is dead, another is
wounded.

drug store on Riverland Drive, that's
near Garden City Blvd.
Roanoke Police say during an
attempted robbery the suspect was shot
and killed inside the store.
The clerk was also shot and taken
to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

was at the intersection when it
happened and saw the would-be robber
enter the drug store.

This after the teen accused of
hitting the toddler was found *not

In court today, Silby testified
that she was reaching for her cell
phone as she drove up Seminole Drive
that morning.
*CG locator Madison Heights Prosecutors say reaching for the
January 14 phone caused Silby to take her eyes off
the road, and that's when she hit Rose.
Silby says she tried to do the
right thing by calling police when she
realized she may have hit Rose.
A judge ruled that taking your
eyes off the road does not constitute
reckless driving.
He chose an *improper* driving
conviction with a fine of 500 dollars.
Rose's godmother, Catrena, says
she now wants an apology from Silby.

busted the same two businesses for
selling illegal fireworks.
And last night another unexpected
twist.
Police found several homemade
bombs at one of the business owner's
homes.

off Route 40 East in..

in State Police experts to safely get
them out of the home.
The homeowner not only allegedly
making these in his house but he had

Because of anonymous tips, this
is the second time in less than a week
police have raided Boones Mill Pottery
and confiscated a large amount of
illegal fireworks.
Authorities also raided Hilltop
-- for the same thing.
And again both stores were in
trouble around the fourth of July last
year.

selling illegal fireworks is a 25
hundred dollars fine and no matter how
many times you break the law it's 25
hundred dollars.
So that's what both businesses
face.

However, making a pipe bomb is a
felony - so you're talking a stiffer
punishment for that one business owner.
Formal charges haven't been
handed down yet.

Successful. Doing well on the Track is
at the top of the list but also
securing sponsorship to fund a Sprint
Cup Team is neccessary.
With the Economy not very good
and results not very good, Chip
Gannassi is shutting down one of his
race teams.

Gannassi has ceased operation on
Dario Franchitti's race team because of
a lack of sponsorship.
Franchitti who is a Rookie on the
Sprint Cup Series had qualified for
just 10 of 17 races this season, he
also mised some time where he was out
with a broken ankle.
Franchitti never recorded a Top
10 Finish. His Best result a 22nd at
Martinsville.
He moved over to Nascar after a
2-thousand 7 Season in the Indy Racing
league that saw him win both the Series
Championship and the Indianpolis
5-hundred.
With Franchitti's team out, that
leaves Sabates-Gannassi Racing with 2
Teams in the Cup Series.

for a much bigger treat this holiday
weekend, with 3 big races on tap in the
area as part of the Coventry
Commonwealth Games.

1996 Saturn Festival Cup Gone are the days of the Saturn
:00 Festival Cup races in downtown Roanoke
and the Tour Dupont which made a yearly
trek thru the city in the mid 90's.
But this weekend, the Roanoke
Cycling Organization will stage the ID3
races,
*CG locator Roanoke starting with a Friday criterium on a 3 1996 Tour Dupont quarter mile course on the market, :13 circling the Wachovia Tower.
That will be followed up by a
climb up Mill Mountain on Saturday and
a Blacksburg criterium on Sunday around
the campus of Virginia Tech.
It's all in an effort to bring
cycling back to the forefront.

from Tiger to play in the event.
