spending their fourth of July trying to
put out a fire on Cove Mountain.
That's just five miles outside of
Buchanan.
The fire has destroyed 100- acres
so far and is causing road closures
along Route 43, from the town of
Buchanan to the Botetourt County line.

the fire hasn't grown very much but it
is still not contained.
Right now, about 40 firefighters
are forming containment lines and
trying to get an idea of the best way
to fight the flames.
So at this point, it's touch and
go.

The fire's thick- heavy smoke can
be seen from Route 43.
The steep and rocky terrain is
making it difficult for fire crews to
get to the scene.
The good news is it's not
affecting any homes.
But the fire is also burning
along the Appalachain Trail, so hiking
from Bearwallow Gap to Jennings Creek
is prohibited.
Meantime firefighters are hoping
that much talked about rain will come
through

1973 to 2003, the Republican senator
from North Carolina fought against
what he considered liberal elitism,
opposed abortion and supported
voluntary school prayer.
As chairman of the Foreign Relations
Committee, he railed against communism.

"I think we should send the Soviet
Union nothing. No wheat, no computer
technology...no nothing that they
need."
Jesse Alexander Helms, Jr. was born
October 18, 1921. After a stint in the
Navy, he married Dorothy Coble. They
had three children. In 1950 Helms
helped
conservative Democrat Willis Smith win
a seat in the senate.
After serving as a Washington lobbyist,
Helms returned to his home state and
was elected to the Raleigh City
Council. In 1960 he began delivering
the
nightly editorials on the local TV
station. And in 1972, he rode President
Nixon's coattails to become a US
Senator.
Helms fought many battles over tobacco,
his state's cash crop. He went toe to
toe with other senators for naming a
holiday after Martin Luther King, Jr.,
something he was adamantly against. And
he often confronted what he called the
liberal media.

The last two of Helm's five victories
came against Harvey Gant. The race
gained national attention not only
because Gant was African-American, but
also because of a Helms' commercial
urging white voters to reject Gant
because of his support for Affirmative
Action.

With failing health Helms didn't seek a
sixth term. When it came to Jesse
Helms, no one in North Carolina was
neutral. His enemies called him mean
and
narrow minded. His supporters
celebrated him as a man of principle
and
character.
One thing was always certain...you

stood

A cosmetic surgery for wrinkles is now
be being used by British doctors to
stop migraines.
This plastic surgeon says it involves a
muscle in the forehead that's removed
to reduce frown lines.

It's called the corrugator muscle.....
which lies between the branches of a
nerve. Doctors say by taking out the
muscle - pressure on the nerve is
released - and with it the cause of
the headaches.

But it's not for everyone. To find out
if a patient is a candidate doctors
first use another wrinkle fighter -
botox - to paralyze the muscle. If in
a
couple of weeks the patient feels
migraine relief.... they can have the
surgery.

U-S...... but doctors overseas are the
first to offer it on a widespread basis
and a new clinic has just opened in
London.

We should have a verdict after many
more procedures are done. If it's
favorable we'll likely see the surgery
move to America.

soon be slowing down and he wants you
to do the same thing.
Warner is suggesting that Congress
should consider re- imposing a national
speed
limit to save gasoline.
The Republican yesterday said he
wants to know if the administration
might support efforts in Congress to
require a lower speed limit.
Congress in 1974 set a national 55
miles-per-hour speed limit because of
energy shortages caused by the Arab oil
embargo. The speed limit was repealed
in 1995.
Warner cited studies that showed the
55 miles-per-hour speed limit saved 167
thousand barrels of oil each day.

has given birth to twins in India.

The couple reportedly used in-vitro
fertilization. They mortgaged their

got underway with the annual Showcase.

Scouts from all over the nation
showed up this morning to watch the
four all-star teams from around the
state work out.
The players took both infield and
batting practice in preparation for
their weekend long tournament.
For many of those taking part in
this weekends tourney, it's not the
first time that they've been in front
of scouts but still the players and
coaches know how important it is to
make a lasting impression in the minds
of those watching.

the low 90s, with lows expected to get
down somewhere in the 70s.

"grip" on the July 4th weekend race at
the beach was tough, now it's a true
