reached 100 acres in size.
It's located on Cove Mountain.
No homes are in harms way...

A stop along Route 43, nestled between
the trees--is a glimpse of the fire on
Cove Mountain.
While firecrews are busy containing it,
Forest Officials keep an eye on it from
a far.

RELATIVELY SMALL, IF WEATHER STAY LIKE
IT IS, IT SHOULDN'T GROW RAPIDLY."
But in the mean time, the forest's
rough, steep terrain is making the fire
hard to contain.

THERE, AND IT TAKES A WHILE FOR PEOPLE
TO WALK IN THERE, IT JUST BE SLOW AND
METHODICAL LABOR."
THE FIRE IS ALSO BURNING ALONG THE
APPALACHAIN TRAIL, SO FOREST OFFICIALS
ARE WARNING HIKERS AND OTHER HOLIDAY
TRAVELERS TO BE PREPARED.
Dan Johnson started hiking earlier in
the day..He says he and others were
forced to cut their hikes short.
"I MET SEVERAL THROUGH HIKERS OR
SECTION HIKERS THIS MORNING, KIND OF A
PROBLEM FOR THEM, SO THEY'VE HAD TO
FIND A PASSAGE OVER TO ANOTHER PLACE."
The fire's also causing problems for
drivers. Route 43 is closed to through
traffic, from Buchanan to the Botetourt
County line.

fingers that much talked about rain

Tech student was stabbed this morning.
It happened around 1:30 in the
900- block of Prices Fork Road.
Police say 21- year old Jonathan
Samuels of Blacksburg stabbed the
student during a fight.
Both Samuels and the student were
taken to the hospital.
Samuels is charged with malicious
wounding.
He remains in jail without bond.

Helms died early this morning at
the age of 86.

people who visit Apple Ridge Farm

educators who raised him with high
expectations. He spent his summers on a
300- acre dairy farm, owned by his aunt
and uncle.
As a graduate student and

sheriff in the city of Roanoke.
Quiana Parker has completed her
first year as a teacher at Roanoke's
William Ruffner Middle School. Like
Byrd, she first visited Apple Ridge as
a camper and she's still involved.

Roanoke. The Roanoke Cycling
Organization held the first of three
bike races for the weekend.

Ceremonies are 2 weeks from Today, but
one of the signature events of the
games began this afternoon in Salem.
And it wasn't about winning
medals, it was more about winning the
favor of some baseball experts.

Kiwanis Field to watch the Commonwealth
Games Baseball Participants be put
through a workout that includes the 60
yard dash, Throwing and Hitting. The
High School Underclassmen have a little
different experience hitting with both
aluminum and Wood Bats while in the
Cage.

best talent in the state of Virginia
has been on display as part of the
Commonwealth Games.

Daytona for Saturday Night's Coke Zero
4-hundred.
When the Cup Cars return to
Daytona to begin Next Season. Mark
Martin will return in a new ride.

VO-NAT Martin who is driving a part-time
schedule this season for Dale Earnhardt
Incorportated will move over to the
Hendrick Motorsports Stable Next season
and go back to racing a Full-time
schedule. Martin replaces Casey Mears
in the Number 5 Car.
Martin is 48 years old and is
taking one last shot at winning the
Sprint Cup Championships that has
eluded him over his career. He has
finished 2nd 4 times in his career.
