Barack Obama insists........His

THROUGH-OUT THIS CAMPAIGN. THIS WAR
WAS ILL-CONCEIVED, IT WAS A STRATEGIC

BLUNDER, AND IT NEEDS TO COME TO AN
END."

But he got himself in a bit of hot
water yesterday when he SEEMED to
suggest

an upcoming trip to Iraq could change
his thinking on the 16-month time-table

for withdrawal he's promised for
MONTHS.

(SOT SEN. BARACK OBAMA/D-PRESIDENTIAL

CANDIDATE 143319): "WHEN I GO TO IRAQ

AND I HAVE A CHANCE TO TALK TO SOME OF
THE COMMANDERS ON THE GROUND, I'M SURE

I'LL HAVE MORE INFORMATION AND WILL
CONTINUE TO REFINE MY POLICIES."

He re-affirmed his commitment to
withdrawal a short-time later but the
damage

was done. The McCain campaign -
already working to paint Obama as as a

flip-flopper - saw an opening and ran
with it, releasing a statement reading

--QUOTE-- (gfx)

"Now that Barack Obama has changed
course and proven his past positions to
be

just empty words, we would like to

congratulate him for accepting John

McCain's principled stand..."

(nats Iraq combat)

The war is shaping up as a campaign
issue second only to the economy.
Obama's

early opposition to it has been a
critical component of his
candidacy...But

he's toned down his rhetoric as the
troop surge produced results.

National security is John McCain's
strong suit, but he must argue to
continue

a war the public generally doesn't
want. After saying earlier this year
he

could see U-S forces in Iraq for
another 100 years, now he speaks more
of

withdrawal...but only with honor...and
only with victory.

OQ=I'm Alexis Christoferous < (END SOT) TODAY...WITH THE STOCK MARKET CLOSED

FOR THE FOURTH OF JULY HOLIDAY.

THE MARKETS WRAPPED UP THURSDAY ON A
MOSTLY POSITIVE NOTE...RELIEVED THAT
THE JUNE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE HELD STEADY
AT 5-POINT-5 PERCENT.

AT THE END OF A SHORTENED DAY OF
TRADING, THE DAY WAS UP 73 POINTS...BUT
THE NASDAQ LOST 6.

TRADERS HEAD BACK TO WORK ON MONDAY TO
FACE A FLURRY OF ECONOMIC
READINGS...INCLUDING THE LATEST ON
PENDING HOME SALES, THE TRADE GAP AND
CONSUMER CONFIDENCE.

MANY AMERICANS ARE SPENDING THE HOLIDAY
IN THEIR OWN BACK YARDS, GROUNDED BY
HIGH FUEL PRICES. ALASKA PAYS THE MOST,
AT AN AVERAGE OF ABOUT 4.65 A GALLON.
THE LOWEST PRICES ARE IN OKLAHOMA, AT
ABOUT 3.88.

THERE WON'T BE MUCH RELIEF UNTIL THE
OIL MARKET GOES INTO RETREAT. BUT FOR
NOW, PRICES ARE AT THEIR HIGHEST LEVEL
EVER. CRUDE SURGED TO CLOSE WELL ABOVE
145 DOLLARS A BARREL.

HIGHER FUEL PRICES ARE PUTTING THE
SQUEEZE ON STORE OWNERS. SHOPS ARE
GOING DARK AT MALLS ALL ACROSS THE
COUNTRY. RETAIL VACANCIES ARE HOVERING
AT ABOUT 10-PERCENT ACCORDING TO REAL
ESTATE EXPERTS. AND THAT NUMBER COULD
JUMP TO 12-PERCENT BY THE END OF THE
YEAR...
