Former North Carolina Senator Jesse
Helms has died on this Fourth of July.

three decades in Congress, was 86 years
old.

(END SOT) Jesse Helms was a conservatives'
conservative. Once dubbed "The Shining
Knight" of the political right. From
1973 to 2003, the Republican senator
from North Carolina fought against
what he considered liberal elitism,
opposed abortion and supported
voluntary school prayer.
As chairman of the Foreign Relations
Committee, he railed against communism.
SOT: Sen. Jesse Helms (R-NC) (00:24)
"I think we should send the Soviet
Union nothing. No wheat, no computer
technology...no nothing that they
need."
Jesse Alexander Helms, Jr. was born
October 18, 1921. After a stint in the
Navy, he married Dorothy Coble. They
had three children. In 1950 Helms
helped
conservative Democrat Willis Smith win
a seat in the senate.
After serving as a Washington lobbyist,
Helms returned to his home state and
was elected to the Raleigh City
Council. In 1960 he began delivering
the
nightly editorials on the local TV
station. And in 1972, he rode President
Nixon's coattails to become a US
Senator.
Helms fought many battles over tobacco,
his state's cash crop. He went toe to
toe with other senators for naming a
holiday after Martin Luther King, Jr.,
something he was adamantly against. And
he often confronted what he called the
liberal media.
(Nats; Helms confronts journalist)
The last two of Helm's five victories
came against Harvey Gant. The race
gained national attention not only
because Gant was African-American, but
also because of a Helms' commercial
urging white voters to reject Gant
because of his support for Affirmative
Action.
(Nats: Campaign commercial)
With failing health Helms didn't seek a
sixth term. When it came to Jesse
Helms, no one in North Carolina was
neutral. His enemies called him mean
and
narrow minded. His supporters
celebrated him as a man of principle
and
character.
One thing was always certain...you
always knew exactly where Jesse Helms
stood
and he let you know it. Drew Levinson,
CBS News.

A cosmetic surgery for wrinkles is now
be being used by British doctors to
stop migraines.
This plastic surgeon says it involves a
muscle in the forehead that's removed
to reduce frown lines.
(SOT-Dr. Thomas Muehlberger/Plastic
Surgeon)
"WE DISCOVERED THAT TAKING OUT THIS
PARTICULAR MUSCLE THERE WERE OVER THE
YEARS MORE AND MORE PATIENTS WHO TOLD
US BY THE WAY MY MIGRAINE HAD
IMPROVED."
(ANIMATION)
It's called the corrugator muscle.....
which lies between the branches of a
nerve. Doctors say by taking out the
muscle - pressure on the nerve is
released - and with it the cause of
the headaches.
(NATS)
But it's not for everyone. To find out
if a patient is a candidate doctors
first use another wrinkle fighter -
botox - to paralyze the muscle. If in
a
couple of weeks the patient feels
migraine relief.... they can have the
surgery.
(STANDUP: Dr. Sean Kenniff/CBS
NEWS/Miami, FL)
The procedure was discovered in the
U-S...... but doctors overseas are the
first to offer it on a widespread basis
and a new clinic has just opened in
London.
(NATS)
Small studies have shown the treatment
is effective.
(SOT-Ricki Nerreter/Suffered Migraines)
"IT CHANGED MY WHOLE LIFE BASICALLY IT
WAS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AFTERWARDS. I
HAD NO MIGRAINES."
Still, many experts aren't completely
sold.
(SOT-Dr. Andy Dowson/Headache
Specialist)
"ONE OF THE PRECURSORS TO THE TREATMENT
IS TO HAVE BOTOX INJECTION TO SEE IF
THAT WOULD HAVE AN EFFECT ON HEADACHE.
WHEN WE GIVE BOTOX IN HEADACHE
PATIENTS WE TEND TO GIVE IT IN A MUCH
MORE WIDE AREA THAN JUST CORRUGATOR, SO
I THINK THE JURY WOULD BE OUT FROM MY
PERSPECTIVE."
We should have a verdict after many
more procedures are done. If it's
favorable we'll likely see the surgery
move to America.

Center. A cold front will inch toward
the region today, creating more clouds
and a 40% chance of afternoon showers
and storms. Expect a hot and humid July
4th with highs forecast in the upper
80s. Winds from the southwest will be
responsible for pushing humidity values
upward. Mostly cloudy skies with
scattered showers and isolated storms
are in the outlook for late Friday
night. Lows in the muggy mid 60s. The
weekend will average about a 50% chance
of showers and storms with otherwise
mostly cloudy skies thanks to the front
meandering across the region. This
doesn't mean it's going to rain all the
time, but it certainly means to watch
the sky, and to be prepared to duck
indoors if storms fire. Highs are
forecast in the lower 80s this weekend
thanks to more cloudiness, but it's
still going to remain rather humid.
FRIDAY: Partly sunny. 40% storms. Hot.
High: 87
FRIDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy. Passing

Those who are able to attend will
notice some improvements at Kiwanis
Field that have already been completed,
such as brand new bathrooms replacing
the outdated one behind the first base
stands, as well as a brand new roof on
the clubhouse.
But that is not where the changes
will stop, as the field itself will get
a makeover, but not until just before
the softball game takes place.
