moving more than 40 positions to a new
regional office in Minnesota.
The Roanoke- based company
informed employees in a memo this
afternoon.
Tonight, the company is stressing
that its Store Support Center will
remain here.

Natasha, the company has
confirmed what we learned from sources
earlier this evening that approximately
40 positions currently located in
Roanoke, will soon be based in
Minnesota.

The jobs that are leaving Roanoke
are related to merchandising and
inventory on the "Do It Yourself" side
of the auto parts business.
Advance is trying to reinvigorate
its retail stores, while it brings in
more commercial customers. By moving
these positions to Minneapolis it hopes
to draw talent from other major
retailers who are based in that area.
A spokesperson says a dozen other
positions will be added here, and the
company is stressing that the store
support center will remain in Roanoke.

seems that the headset the Sonic
employee was wearing took the strike
instead -- but it did blow the bottom
of her shoe out.

parts of California...

humidity this weekend helped crews near
Santa Barbara to make progress on a
stubborn wildfire that's been burning
since last Tuesday.
400 members of the National Guard
have been called in to help battle
through steep, rocky forest terrain and
dry brush to get to the fires.
The efforts have helped lift some
of the mandatory evacuations in the
area and people have starting returning
home in all but the most remote
mountain communities.

It happned near Chesapeake --
investigators say an 18-year-old now
faces felony, and misdemeanor charges
after an illegal fireworks display
caused 100-thousand dollars in damage
to a neighbor's soybean crop.
Ryan Everton is charged with
burning standing crops, which is a
felony.

the suspect trying to cash her checks.
Police in Martinsville say the
robbery happened in the parking lot at
Liberty Fair Mall.
About two hours later, the victim
was at the bank when she saw the
suspect trying to cash her checks --
that's when she called 9-1-1.
Police arrested Michael Leon
Hall, Junior.
Hall's charged with one felony
county of robbery -- he's in the

A judge also ordered him to have

control of his truck in January on
Union Valley Road in Riner, crashed

central and southside Virginia.
A newspaper ad running in
Danville and Lynchburg says a company
called Temp 1 employment is filling
customer service positions.
Consumers who respond are told
they will be secret shoppers.They are
then asked to deposit a check from the
company and wire the money to a company
representative.
The BBB says these are not real
job offers, but a scheme to get money
and that consumers should use extreme
caution.

natural disasters.

Myanmar, where he delivered food and
supplies to victims of a deadly
cyclone.
Zook is working with Appomattox
County-based Gleaning for the World, to
deliver aid from Central Virginia.

Church the steadfastness of these now

student enrolling at Maury High School
in 1958.

Senator Barack Obama was forced to
start the week talking about himself.

LANDING, PEOPLE ARE CONCERNED."
His campaign's chartered plane made an
unscheduled landing after an
evactuation slide deployed in flight.
No one was hurt but the delay forced
Obama to postpone a trip to North
Carolina to talk about rising food and
fuel
prices. His rival John McCain is also
focusing on the economy this week.

John McCain's plan includes a new round
of tax deductions and credits, and
creating new incentives for small
businesses. The Arizona senator argues

his plan is much stronger than his
opponent's.

wants to link McCain's proposal -- to
the Bush Administration's economic
plan.
He hopes to convince voters -- it's
time for a change."
The Illinois democrat's plan includes
tax breaks, a stimulus for the middle
class and a fund to help homeowners
avoid foreclosure.
Obama's party has its own economic
worries. Democrats still need to find
at
least 11 million dollars to fund their
August convention in Denver. Monday the
Obama campaign announced that their
candidate would give his acceptance
speech in the city's football stadium.
That means he'll have a live audience
of 75 thousand, but it may make the
costs even higher.

Detective Chris Nielsen has died.
Though he worked in uniform for
brief periods, he spent most of his
22-year career with the county as a
criminal investigator.
He retired just last August.
Apart from his law enforcement
career, Nielsen was also well known for
his work in city schools, 4-H Camp, as
a lay pastor and a biker.
His sister says Chris was always
"on."

a man seriously hurt by a train this
weekend.

It happened yesterday morning
along the tracks near Shenanadoah
Avenue and Tenth Street.
Police say 21 year old Tyler Jim
Shepherd of Arizona was hurt when he
attempted to jump off a moving train.
He's in serious condition at
Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Two people who were with Shepherd
were charged with trespassing.

commuter service between Lynchburg and
Washington D-C.
trains each day - but they run from New
York to New Orleans and tickets are
hard to come by.
Lynchburg leaders say the new
train would take traffic off the
highway and allow people to work in D-C
while living in Central Virginia.

month's NBA draft went head to head
today with the number two pick getting
the best of the top dog as the Miami
Heat took on the Chicago Bulls.

Derrick Rose was the top pick overall
going to the Bulls did a nice job
scoring 10 points on 3-for-8 shooting,
with four assists, but he did have five
turnovers as his new head coach Vinny
Del Negro looked on from the sideline.
The entire Bulls coaching staff
saw entirely too much Michael Beasley.
The number two pick in the draft out of
Kansas State made his first pro outing
a memorable one to say the least as he
scored 28 points in just 23 minutes to
lift the Heat to a 94-to-70 win over
the Bulls.
Each team in the summer league
plays five games and usually the games
are glorified scrimmages, but this one
garnered more attention than most.

His wife Cynthia Rodridguez filed
the papers claming Rodriguez is an
adulterer who has emotionally abandoned
her and their children.
The petition for dissolution of
the marriage was filed in the family
division of Miami-Dade County Circuit
Court today. The couple has a $12
million dollar home in the same area in
an upscale neighborhood in Coral
Gables. The New York tabloids have
recently linked A-Rod with Madonna, but
the papers make no mention of her.
Neither Alex nor his attorney - who
also represents Shaquille O'Neal - have
commented on the petition.

afternoon there was an all-star calibre
trade as the Indians traded pitcher
C.C. Sabathia to Milwaukee in exchange
for four players.

Sabathia becomes the first
reigning Cy Young winner to be traded
since Roger Clemens was dealt to the
New York Yankees after winning the
award with the Toronto Blue Jays 10
years ago in 1998.
Sabathia was eligible for free
agency after this season after going
19-and-7 with a 3.21 earned run average
a year ago when he won the Cy Young.
In return for the power pitcher, the
Indians get four young prospects in the
Milwaukee organization. The Brewers
hope Sabathia will help them make the
playoffs for the first time since 1982.
