fired during maneuvers.
The Iranians say they're just trying
to show the country is strong enough to
strike back, if it's attacked.
But the White House says this is
NOT the way to go about it.

It's part war game -- and part show of
strength.
(NAT) - LAUNCH
Iran test-fired nine missiles
Wednesday, hoping to show that it can
retaliate
against any attack by the U-S or
Israel.
The missiles shown on state television
are powerful enough to put Israel,
Turkey, Afghanistan, and Pakistan
within striking distance.
A top Iranian military commander had a
message for countries that threaten
Iran:

"Our finger is always on the trigger,"
he said.

NEWS / THE WHITE HOUSE) - "the White
House condemned the missile tests. A
spokesman for President Bush went on to
say, the administration remains
committed to a diplomatic solution --
and he
called on the Iranians to stop work on
ballistic missiles."
The presidential candidates are also
weighing in. In a statement,
Republican
John McCain said the tests show the
need for a missile defense shield in
Europe.
Democrat Barack Obama believes they
underline the need for a new policy
that
would force Iran into changing its
ways.

Iran's missle tests were conducted near
the Strait of Hormuz. It's a key
waterway -- because 40-percent of the
world's oil passes through it.
Iran has threatened to shut down the
Strait if it's attacked... A move a U-S
military commander says would be viewed
as an act of war.

the world of NASCAR today.
Published reports say driver Tony
Stewart is parting ways with Joe Gibbs
Racing.

VO-NAT The two-time NASCAR champion is
expected to be released from his
contract with Joe Gibbs Racing today.
The move would become effective at
the end of the season.
That will allow Stewart to purchase
his own race team for next year.
Stewart is buying a 50 percent
stake in the fledgling two- car team of
Haas- CNC Racing.
By owning his own team, Stewart
believes he could ensure a spot for
himself in NASCAR, long after his
driving days.

wanted out, the Gibbs' team finally
gave in.
Gibbs Racing is expected to replace

consulate in Istanbul has put all
American diplomatic missions on high
alert in Turkey.
At least six people are dead after
attackers armed with pistols and
shotguns ambushed a police guard post.

minutes...in broad daylight, just
outside the walls of the U-S Consulate
in Istanbul. Turkish officials call
it a terrorist attack

Emergency crews tried to save
lives...but in the end, three Turkish
policemen
were reported dead, along with three of
the attackers. The Embassy says no
Americans were wounded.
(SOUND UP TURKISH OFFICIAL)
There's no motive yet...Government
officials will only say they were
Turkish
nationals. They are not confirming
reports the shooters may have trained
in
Afghanistan.
(SOUND UP EYEWITNESS)
Witnesses say the attackers came out of
a car and opened fire on the police
post right outside the main entrance to
the consulate.
The building is highly fortified, set
back on a hill and sheltered behind a
15-foot wall. It was built after a
series of suicide bombings five years
ago
...60 people were killed then.
(SIRENS)
Those attackers were linked to Al
Qaida...but the Turkish government,
which is
democratic and secular...has vowed to
keep up the fight against homegrown
militants.
America's ambassador to Turkey asked
for increased security around all
American diplomatic missions... and
offered support to the government.

A judge has decided to suspend the
original sentence for 16- year- old
Brandon Dawson.
Instead of possibly being held in a
juvenile facility until he's 21, Dawson
will spend 180 days in an intensive
program at the Blue Ridge Detention
Center.
Dawson was also ordered to pay about
12- thousand- 500 dollars in
restitution.
19- year-old Slade Woodson is also
charged in connection with the
shootings that left two people slightly
injured.
Woodson's trial is scheduled for
September 16.

Commonwealth's Attorney to discuss the
case involving a drug store owner who
shot and killed a would be robber.
Now, Corey Ramsey's family is
speaking out.

VO-NAT Last Tuesday, Ramsey entered the
Sanco Drug Store in southeast Roanoke
with the intent to rob it.
When it was all over, Ramsey was
dead and the store clerk was injured.
As News 7's Justin McLeod tells

owner went too far and should be
punished for it.

Manhattan.

scaling the building early this
morning.
The Times says at one point, the
climber unfurled a banner that made
reference to Osama bin Laden.
It all made for quite a
spectacle...

Forecast Center. Warm, humid air will
remain in place in advance of a cold
front set to arrive later in the week.
Look for highs in the mid 80s, and
muggy too! Looks like the best storm
coverage will be Wednesday afternoon
and evening as the cold front
approaches. Some may be strong to
severe. Thursday, the front passes
through leading to another afternoon of
scattered storms. Highs will reach the
mid 80s. Drier northwest winds will
follow the cold front passage Friday,
providing a pleasant end to the week
and into the upcoming weekend. Along
with the temperatures, dew points will
also be low. The end result? A mainly
sunny and comfortable weekend! It's
been nearly a month since we've had a
shower-free weekend across this part of

Now VDOT is hoping to preserve
this 912 foot long iron structure.
They're offering a one-time
monetary incentive of 267 thousand
dollars - the amount it would take to
demolish it.
But that amount they say would
probably barely cover it's move to a
new home.

West Virginian about four million
dollars.

ex-football coach Rich Rodriguez has
agreed to pay a four million dollar
buyout clause after breaking his
contract.
That would settle the university's
lawsuit that had been set for trial
this fall.
Rodriguez quit the Mountaineers in
December for the head coaching job at
Michigan, only a year after extending
his contract at West Virginia.
He claimed West Virginia broke the
contract first by failing to honor
certain promises -- a charge the
university denies.

win this season - has confirmed that it
is losing its sponsor for next season

Earnhardt's Nationwide Series team
since 2005 when Junior first formed JR
Motorsports.
Not only is the NAVY leaving the
car owned by the most popular figure in
all of NASCAR, it is doing so with a

NAVY Chevrolet and this car is
currently second in the Nationwide
series points standings.

An internet report on the
Sporting News website clamied that the
company the late Dale Earnhardt founded
was for sale.

owner Teresa Earnhardt had commissioned
the investment banking firm of Bear,
Stearns & Co. Inc. to locate a buyer or

doubt that the new trend in NASCAR -
especially in these economic times - is
to collaborate with outside investment

fastest growing sports in the Roanoke
Valley, thanks in large part to the
success of Roanoke College and its head
coach Bill Pilat.
But this week it's not the
locals who are taking up space at
Pilats' annual Goalie Camp on the
college's campus in Salem.

VO-NAT 125 goaltenders from all
over the country have set up shop on
the field turf at Donald J. Kerr
Stadium.
This is the 18th year for the
camp, and as usual, it's at full
capacity, with youngsters trying to
better their skills between the pipes.
And it is a melting pot
this week, with aspiring goalies from
as far away as Oregon, California,
Idaho, and even Canada.
