"The Bluest Water" is based on
the night of August 20th, 1969.

That's when Camille dumped 30
inches of rain in just 6 hours over
Nelson County, killing 153 people.

Amherst native Geoffrey Kershner
developed the play as an experience for
those who remember the storm - and
those who don't.

The story is fictional, but the
characters were created from interviews
done with actual survivors.

Several dozen adults and children
visiting the Bronx Zoo became trapped

in cages of their own Wednesday.

Around 5:30 in the evening, sightseeing
cable cars above the zoo that are part
of the Sky - fari attraction came to a
halt. ..suspending the passengers in
mid-air, a hundred feet over the animal
attractions.

Olga Perez/Trapped Visitor "My son was
really, really frightened." (:18-:21)

At least 37 people in 14 cars dangled
above habitats that house baboons and
other animals.

Standup: Kathryn Brown/Bronx Zoo: No
one was hurt, though one woman who was
seven months pregnant was taken to a
local hospital. (:27-:35)

(Video provided by NYPD)

Rescuers perched above the cars,
finally freeing some of the passengers
about two and a half hours after the
cable cars stopped.

But the entire process was slow - going
and the rescues continued as night

fell.

Jim Breheny/Bronx Zoo Director
"Everybody worked very efficiently,
very slowly with safety first, and it
was a happy ending." (:48-:55)

Even so, this was a long ordeal, with
some passengers trapped 5 hours before
the ride was back up and running.
Officials have already determined why
the cars stopped.

23:29:39 Ray Kelly/NYPD Police Chief:
"The wheels that would normally be
flush with the cable had separated from
one of the towers, causing a safety
mechanism to trigger." (1:05-1:16)

That shut down power to the cars,
leading to one visit to the zoo these
passengers certainly won't forget.

GRAPHIC=None Memories of Hurricane Camille are

still fresh for many in Nelson County.

But for those who weren't around
or don't remember the 1969 storm, a new
play is letting them experience what
happened.

News 7's Tim Saunders tells us
how the show came together.

OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7, Amherst << Sounds of thunder and lightning

County. A man clings to life in the midst
(END SOT) of a storm.

The scene represents August 20th,
1969 - the night Hurricane Camille
dumped 30 inches of rain in just 6
hours, over Central Virginia.

Geoffrey Kershner/Play Director:
"This really came back into my memory
and was something growing up in this
area that I knew was a big part of
living here in the 1960's."

Geoffrey Kershner and Jason
Chimonides wrote the play as a way to
remember the storm and teach others
about the event.

Kershner: "We wanted to do a play
that was about the area, for the area."

Jason Chimonides/Playwright: "I
had no idea that it had done so much
damage in Nelson County, so far north
from where the eye of the hurricane
hit."

"My mama told me to let go of her

hand."

It's raw emotion as the audience
learns what it was like to survive the
storm.

The story is fictional, but it's
based on first hand accounts from
actual survivors.

Kershner: "We met with survivors
of the storm. We also met with folks
who were involved in the recovery
effort."

Chimonides: "We sort of combined
real people and added a little pixie
dust and imagination as well."

Part of the experience of the
play is the scenery. The crew spent
several weeks collecting items from
around the area to show the audience
what the aftermath of Camille was
really like.

Krista Franco/Scene Designer:
"Bringing pieces that people can
recognize, and bringing them into the
space as part of the memory, is
something that I really wanted to do."

Kershner hopes it'll offer a new
perspective of the storm.

"At the end, the play is really
about how human beings deal with loss

and great tragedy."

A tragedy that's still a big part
of our local history.

working with are horses - the equine
events are being held in Hong Kong -
because the horses less likely to catch
diseases there.

recruited for the games in Atlanta
where heat and humidity were serious
issues for the four-legged athletes -
same as expected for nearly 200 horses
in Hong Kong.

SKY1 << Good morning, I'm meteorologist Leo LEO TOSS STRAIGHT TO COMMERCIAL Hirsbrunner in the SkyTracker7 Forecast
Center. A cold front (or shall we say, COMM cool front) will move through the
region today and stall out just to our
south. The front will slowly fall apart
but still could trigger a few afternoon
showers and storms. While storm
coverage should be minimal, it looks
like more clouds than sunshine to
start. Highs will remain in the upper
80s. For weather anytime turn to our
