missile test-firing from land...

(NAT) - LAUNCH

And, from ships at sea. The goal:
showing Iran can defend itself against
any

attack by the U-S or Israel. Iranian
state television also said -- the

missiles have special capabilities --
but didn't give details.

The display came just hours after a
strong warning from Secretary of State

Condoleezza Rice - who said the US will
not back down when Israel is

threatened.

(SOT: CONDOLEEZZA RICE / SECRETARY OF

STATE) - "WE TAKE VERY, VERY STRONGLY

(STANDUP BRIDGE: Susan Roberts / CBS
NEWS / THE WHITE HOUSE) - "this comes

less than a day -- after Iran's first
round of war games. The White House

condemned the Wednesday launches --

and called on the Iranians to stop work

on missiles."

Wednesday's day-time tests included a
new version of a long-range missile --

that could reach Israel, Turkey,
Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Arabian

peninsula.

(NAT) - LAUNCH

That test happened near the Strait of
Hormuz -- a key waterway leading into

the Persian Gulf. Up to 40-percent of
the world's oil passes through that

body of water. Iran has threatened to
shut down traffic in the Strait if it

is attacked... But U-S military
commanders say, they won't let that
happen.
