The tax decals on your windshield
are a thing of the past in most parts
of Virginia... or soon will be.
But cities and counties remain
determined to collecting the tax.

Tax revenue in Roanoke has fallen
off in that category by more that six
percent.
At least some people have
apparently decided: if they're not
going to get a decal, they shouldn't
have to pay the tax.

didn't pay the tax. if they thought
they'd get away with that, they'll soon
find out they'll have to pay another
$20 and they won't be able to do
anything at DMV.

robbed a convenience store last month.

Police say on June 19th the
robber stole money and ran off.
The man was last seen traveling

more than 27 thousand dollars from
F-N-B, now Stellar One, entered into a
plea agreement today.
Christina Dove was facing 76
charges, but prosecutors dropped it
down to one felony count of
embezzlement.
She already paid the money back
to the bank and will be on probation
for three years.
Prosecutors say Dove took the
money over a year and a half while
working as a teller at the Radford bank
.

ways to get their hands on the metal.
Just this week, thieves hit a
church and two businesses in Danville.
News 7's Tim Saunders shows us:

(END SOT) Danville's First Presbyterian Church
for members to notice something was
missing.
Jackson Weller/First Presbyterian
Youth Minister: "It was raining and
they saw the water running down the
side of the building."
The copper downspouts that drain
water from the gutters were taken right
off the front of the church.
Weller: "This is residential, so
there are houses and people that live
there. It's kind of surprising that
they would steal right here on Main
Street."
Danville police say it's the
latest in a growing crime for the city.
But thieves may not be getting what
they think.
Lt. John Henderson/Danville
Police Department: "You'd have to get a
lot of copper to make any kind of real
money out of it."
Still, they're going to great
lengths to get it.
One of the most popular ways?
Taking it from an air conditioning
unit.
Mark Young/Air Conditioning
Expert: "There's not 15 to 18 dollars
worth of copper there. So what are
they after? It seems like a whole lot
of trouble for very little money."
Experts say the best way to
protect your copper is to lock it up.
This Danville church had copper stolen
from their air compressor so many
times, they put a cage around it.
Young: "The first precaution is
put a lock on your disconnect, because
if power's going to it and they can't
pull the disconnect, they're more than
likely not going to try to tear it
apart.
Meanwhile, Jackson says insurance
will replace the church gutters.
But when the new ones go up.
"More than likely, it won't be
with copper pipes, because it is so
very expensive right now."
Expensive to fix, and worth
little to the criminal.

morning when his car ran off the road
and hit a tree.
Virginia State Police say
Frankie Leon Fagg was not wearing a
seatbelt.
The crash happened at 7:20
this morning on Route 661, near the
intersection with Route 718 in the
western part of Alleghany County.
Fagg died at the scene. He was
51 years old.

Closed by the town of Blacksburg for
safety reasons.

Carol Crawford Smith.
Classes were canceled because the
building along Draper Road has a
leaking roof - the result of heavy
rains earlier this week.
Crawford Smith got a new house
and work on her dance studio from the
Extreme Makeover team and thousands of
volunteers back in 2005.
She's a former ballerina
diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

this weekend and while there are a
number of interesting storylines for
fans to follow - I would suggest a
history lesson.

50 years ago Richard Petty made
his first NASCAR start in a convertible
division race at the Columbia, South
Carolina speedway. Since that July
12th race in 1958, Petty has influenced
the sport more than any other
indivdual.
His 200 career wins and 7 Winston
Cup Championships are only part of the
reason - the bigger than life Petty is
known as the King.

a treat this weekend at the Motor Mile
Speedway in Radford.

Pro Cup Series will make what's become
an annual stop in the New River Valley.
Gate open at 2 with qualifying set
for 4. The drivers will hold an
autograph session at 5-45.
It's a great chance to see some
of the former late model stars of the
track, including Derek Cale and Floyd's
Jeff Agnew.

major is coming up next week and many
of the top players in the world are
already across the Atlantic tuning up
at what is known as the Scottish Open.
Among those warming up is Phil
Mickelson.

at his best today, in fact he was in
real danger of missing the cut.
That was before he mashed this
five iron on the 190-yard fifth hole.
The ball landed 12 feet short, bounced
once and rolled right into the hole for
a much needed hole in one.
Mickelson finished the day with a
67 and a 4-under 138 two day total. He
made the cut by just two shots.
