GRAPHIC=none Barack Obama's campaign has been hit

Now John McCain's campaign has to

John McCain did NOT need this now.

(SOT SEN. JOHN MCCAIN/R-PRESIDENTIAL

CANDIDATE 135408): "PHIL GRAMM DOES NOT

SPEAK FOR ME. I SPEAK FOR ME."

After spending the past week trying to
convince voters he feels their pain,

McCain was forced into full damage
control after his economic advisor
appeared

to mock the troubles faced by many
Americans.

In an interview with the Washington
Times, former Texas Senator Phil Gramm

questioned the true extent of the
country's economic downturn saying
--QUOTE--

(gfx-in)

"You've heard of mental depression;
this is a mental recession...We have
sort

of become a nation of

whiners...complaining about a loss of

competitiveness...America in decline."
(gfx-out)

(SOT SEN. BARACK OBAMA/D-PRESIDENTIAL

CANDIDATE 134430): "IT'S NOT JUST A

FIGMENT OF YOUR IMAGINATION - IT'S NOT
ALL IN YOUR HEAD!"

Gramm's remarks were tailor-made for
Barack Obama to argue McCain's

out-of-touch with the economy, by far
THE number one issue this campaign

season.

(SOT SEN. BARACK OBAMA/D-PRESIDENTIAL

CANDIDATE 134546): "IT'S TIME WE HAD A

PRESIDENT WHO DOESN'T DENY OUR PROBLEMS
OR BLAME THE AMERICAN PEOPLE FOR

THEM...BUT TAKES RESPONSIBILITY AND
PROVIDES THE LEADERSHIP TO SOLVE THEM."

One place the economic downturn HASN'T
hit is the McCain campaign. They

raised 22-million-dollars in June -
their best month yet.

Not many believe McCain'll be able to
out-spend Obama, who's shattered

fund-raising records and opted out of
federal funding. By accepting public

financing, McCain will get 84-million
for the post-convention campaign.

Obama - by rejecting it - is free to
raise - and spend - as much as he
likes.

Some believe that number could be
north of 200-million-dollars.

(oncam)

Both candidates will hit the heartland
today. John McCain's Mid-West push

brings him to Wisconsin, while Obama
stumps in Ohio.

It was built here in the Roanoke

Meteorologists at the National

believe it was a microburst rather than

Winds estimated over 58 miles per

Two locusts toppled onto J-B

bgrebe@wdbj7.com Kimberly, the actors know to

expect the unexpected.

At eight tonight, the writers
will find out what they're writing
about.

At noon tomorrow, the actors will
get their scripts.

Before that, they have no idea
what the script will be, no idea what
part they'll be playing, no idea who
the fellow actors will be... But they
do know that when they arrive, they
have to quickly learn their lines and
get ready to perform.

It's a fun format where anything
can happen and the performances are
well received because the audience is
also caught up in the whirlwind.

"THIS HAS BEEN A MEMBER OF SOMEONE'S
FAMILY AND MILLIE FEELS THE
SEPARATION..."

SHOW CU OF MILLIE Millie isn't alone--
she's one of a handful of furry friends

left without a home because her owner
couldn't afford to keep her.

"HER OWNER WAS FORCED TO MOVE AND
WASN'T ABLE TO TAKE HER WITH THEM , IT
WAS HEARBREAKING."

Compared to this time last year, the
Roanoke SPCA has seen a 15 percent
increase in pet owners giving up their
pets.

ALOT OF PEOPLE THESE DAYS ARE HAVING TO
MAKE HARD DECISIONS, DO I GIVE UP MY
PET OR DO I FEED MY PET...

For the ones that do keep their pets--
many of them rely on food donations
from the SPCA.

This year the shelter received a
thousand dollars from The Humane
Society of the United States.

The grant money will be used to assist
the shelter in providing food to
animals whose owners rely on food
pantries.

" SINCE EARLY APRIL, WE'VE SUPPLIED

OVER 45 HUNDRED POUNDS OF FOOD TO MAN
OF MINISTRIES."

"THE GRANT MONEY GIVEN BY THE HUMANE
SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES WILL HELP
PROMOTE JUST HOW MUCH DONATED PET FOOD
IS NEEDED HERE IN THE ROANOKE VALLEY."

"THE FEAR WAS HUMANS TAKING SOME OF
THEIR OWN RATIONS AND GIVING IT TO
THEIR PETS."

The money comes from a fund created to
help animal shelters alleviate their
heavy load.

WE HAD ANOTHER SITUATION WHERE A WOMAN
WAS LIVING IN HER CAR WITH HER DOG, SHE
HAD TO GIVE THAT DOG UP BECAUSE SHE
COULDN'T TAKE CARE OF HER ANYMORE."

Ending up at the SPCA ..where they sit
and wait for a new place to call home.

SKY1 << Good morning, I'm meteorologist Leo LEO TOSS STRAIGHT TO COMMERCIAL Hirsbrunner in the SkyTracker7 Forecast
Center. Watch out for some patchy COMM dense fog early this morning. After the
fog burns off we'll see partly sunny
skies as highs warm to the upper 80s.
Drier air should limit storm develop
Friday, expect for perhaps an isolated
storm or two across the southside.
Friday night look for partly cloudy
skies with lows in the low to mid 60s.
High pressure builds overhead Saturday.
This should mean a fairly sunny sky
with hot temperatures hitting the lower
90s in most locations (upper 80s in the
New River Valley and Highlands). A
cold front in the upper midwest/western
Great Lakes will make a run at our

viewing area Sunday. This will increase
storm chances again for the last day of
the weekend to around 30%. Highs are
forecast in the upper 80s Sunday. The
front will cause scattered showers
Monday, with clearing conditions by
Tuesday and Wednesday. FRIDAY: Mostly
sunny & warm. High: 88 FRIDAY NIGHT:
