President Bush has changed his mind.
He's "lifting" the executive ban on
drilling for oil off America's shores
originally signed by his father.
He wants to allow oil companies to
explore an area called the Outer
Continental Shelf - or OCS.
(SOT: PRESIDENT BUSH) - "ADVANCES IN
TECHNOLOGY HAVE MADE IT POSSIBLE TO
CONDUCT OIL EXPLORATION IN THE OCS THAT
IS OUT OF SIGHT, PROTECTS CORAL REEFS
AND HABITATS, AND PROTECTS AGAINST OIL
SPILLS."
But, the decision won't bring quick
relief. It would take years to drill
for
crude oil, refine it - and get it on
the market, that's only if Congress
lifts
its own ban on offshore drilling.
(SOT: PRESIDENT BUSH) - "THE ONLY THING
STANDING BETWEEN THE AMERICAN PEOPLE
AND THESE VAST OIL RESOURCES IS ACTION
FROM THE U-S CONGRESS."
(STANDUP BRIDGE: Susan Roberts / CBS
NEWS / CAPITOL HILL) - "Democrats
aren't
buying the President's argument. They
believe lifting the ban could threaten
the tourism industry in coastal areas.
Instead, they want Mr. Bush to
release oil from the Strategic
Petroleum Reserve."
(14.26.58 / SOT: SEN. HARRY REID / D -
MAJORITY LEADER) - "DRILL, DRILL, DRILL
- THAT'S NOT GONNA DO THE TRICK. WE
HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER AND COME UP WITH
SOMETHING THAT'S MORE MEANINGFUL FOR
THE AMERICAN PEOPLE."
Democrats are also backing a measure
known as the "use it or lose it" bill.
It's aimed at forcing oil companies to
start drilling in the 68-million acres
of land they already hold leases on.
Lawmakers know, the pressure is on.
(NAT) - GAS PUMPS
But as drivers shell out an average of
4-dollars and 10-cents a gallon, they

<< Good evening, I'm meteorologist
Robin Reed in the SkyTracker7 Forecast

the stormy pattern we've been stuck in.
High pressure will build east keeping
the week dry and progressively warmer.
With low-level moisture from this
weekend's rain, look for patchy fog in
the deeper valleys early Tuesday
morning. With the lower dew points,
look for abundant sunshine with a few
fair-weather clouds each afternoon.
Temperatures will start to climb back

EXTENDED OUTLOOK: A few models have a
low pressure system moving out of the

pulling north into our region. The low

Sunday and Monday. If this happened,
the end result would be isolated

mstevens@wdbj7.com Good afternoon everybody and
welcome to the Monday ticker.
The NASCAR silly season is
starting to really get cranked up with
Tony Stewart providing a jumping off
point for at least one driver.

This afternoon Ryan Newman
confirmed that he is leaving Penske
Racing at the end of the current season
and most expect he will end up with
Stewart next year.
Newman, who like Stewart is an

got a full-time Cup ride in 2002
and has since notched 13 victories,
including this year's Daytona 500.
But the 30-year-old Newman has
struggled under Penske the past few
years. He didn't win a single race in
2006 and 2007 and slipped out of the
Chase for the championship both years.
Even with his Daytona 500 win
this season he currently is 16th in the
standings.

interesting there's talk tonight that
Martin Truex Junior may leave DEI and
join forces with Stewart, as well.
This would give Stewart-Haas Racing a
three car team and all but decimate
DEI.

David Palmer of Wales has been
keeping a 308 pound ram as an indoor
pet for several years.
Palmer adopted the sheep, whom he
calls "Nick Boing" from a nature
reserve.
Despite his owner's efforts to
get him re-adjusted to farm life, Nick
seems much more comfortable watching TV
and hanging out in the living room.
Palmer says that Nick is much
more intelligent than your average
sheep, and is in fact, great company.
