died over the weekend when his semi
went up in flames.

burned badly-- so it will take a while

Road crews worked through
the night to replace the guardrail the
driver crashed through.
They had to install 600 feet of

rather take a train than drive the 160
plus miles from Lynchburg.

Resident: "We all have little kids and
that would be ideal for travel for us.
And it would just be fun. Better to
ride on a train than dealing with that
DC traffic."
Expanded train service from
Lynchburg is just one of the ideas
outlined in a new statewide rail plan.
Lynchburg to D-C would be phase
one of the TransDominion express - a
train that would ultimatley bring
passenger service back to Roanoke.
The project would be done in four
phases between now and 2030, with the
Lynchburg service available in 2010.
Meredith Richards/Piedmont Rail
Coalition: "It allows the project to
prove itself by phasing in the most
likely to be successful part of the
project, in terms of ridership."
Meredith Richards is pushing for
more passenger trains through the
Piedmont Rail Coalition.
Richards: "Hopefully, the
potential ridership on the Lynchburg to
Washington part of the coridor will
help jumpstart the TransDominion
express."
Many in Lynchburg say they're
ready for the service.
Katie Gatzke/Lynchburg
Resident:"If the train was available at
reasonable hours and at a reasonable
cost, then I would definitely use it."
The rail plan estimates
149-thousand riders would use the
Lynchburg to D-C train each year.
Richards plans to use those
numbers to press lawmakers for rail
funding.
Richards: "I think this is a
great step forward for Virginia to
begin to enhance its passenger rail
service.">>

to pay for new rail projects.

find the parents of a toddler.
The boy was found alone at the
Plaza Stadium Cinema on Riverside Drive
around 11 this morning.
He's not able to give his name or
age, but police believe he's at least
two years old.
The child will be in the custody

charged with malicious wounding.
She's accused of stabbing a man
in the leg at a home on Cardinal Place.
When Police arrived at the scene,
they say Wimbush was still waving a
knife.

closing Gearhart Park or moving it

Last night, skateboarders showed
up in large numbers pleading with
