GRAPHIC=Economy "Bernanke" News about the state of our economy
is no better today..
Stock prices in the U-S are at a two-

inflation is on the rise.
With all of this as a backdrop, the
federal reserve chairman returns to

OQ=Brown, News 7. <<
(END SOT) Expect more bad news from Fed Chief Ben
Bernanke today.
(SOT FEDERAL RESERVE CHAIRMAN BEN
BERNANKE 101737): "THE ECONOMY
CONTINUES TO
FACE NUMEROUS DIFFICULTIES, INCLUDING
ONGOING STRAINS IN FINANCIAL MARKETS,
DECLINING HOUSE PRICES, A SOFTENING
LABOR MARKET, AND RISING PRICES OF OIL,
FOOD, AND OTHER COMMODITIES."
In his first day of testimony
yesterday, Bernanke told lawmakers the
economy's
caught in a risky cross-current of
sluggish growth AND rising
inflation....And that it's difficult
to try to fix one problem without
making
the other worse.
(SOT BUSH): "I THINK THE SYSTEM
BASICALLY IS SOUND, I TRULY DO."
President Bush acknowledged the
economy's not growing the way it should
but
tried to paint a brighter picture than
the one drawn on Capitol Hill.
(SOT BUSH): "TO THE EXTENT WE FIND
WEAKNESS, WE'LL MOVE. THAT'S ONE THING
ABOUT THIS ADMINISTRATION - WE'RE NOT
AFRAID OF MAKING TOUGH DECISIONS."
(nats bell)
But there wasn't much optimism on Wall
Street. The Dow closed down over 90
points and beneath 11-thousand, its
lowest mark in nearly 2 years.
Everywhere investors look, it's bad
news. Retail sales are down, consumer
prices are up, the dollar keeps
dropping, and unemployment's projected
to
rise.
(SOT DAVID HENDERSON/NYSE TRADER):
"WHAT EVERYONE DOWN HERE IS LOOKING FOR
IS
GUIDANCE AND LEADERSHIP FROM
WASHINGTON. IT'S LONG OVERDUE. WE
NEED TO
RE-BUILD SOME CONFIDENCE INTO THIS
MARKET."
A dose of good news could help stop the
bleeding, but it won't save the
day....As it appears the American
economy's facing a crisis of a lot more
than just confidence.
(oncam)
THE DOWN NEWS ON THE ECONOMY HAS
DEMOCRATS IN CONGRESS PUSHING FOR
ANOTHER
STIMULUS PACKAGE.
THE PRESIDENT WARNS TO WAIT FOR THE
CURRENT STIMULUS TO KICK IN BEFORE
PASSING
ANOTHER.
