- "THE SURVIVAL OF THE UNITED STATES OF

AMERICA AS WE KNOW IT IS AT RISK."

Former Vice President Al Gore returned
to Washington -- with a challenge.

He wants to produce every single
kilowatt of electricity the nation uses
--

through wind, sun and other
earth-friendly energy sources by the
year 2018.

(SOT: AL GORE / FORMER VICE PRESIDENT)

- "THE WAY TO BRING GASOLINE PRICES

DOWN IS TO END OUR DEPENDENCE ON OIL
AND USE RENEWABLE SOURCES THAT COULD

GIVE US THE EQUIVALENT OF $1 GALLON
GASOLINE."

It won't be cheap. Gore estimates, the
challenge could cost the nation up to

3-trillion dollars.

(STANDUP BRIDGE: SUSAN ROBERTS / CBS
NEWS / WASHINGTON, DC) - "the way Gore

sees it, the U.S. can't wait to make

this transition. He says it would cost

just as much to build coal plants to
satisfy our current demand."

We asked folks filling up if they
thought the investment would be worth
it.

(SOT: BOB MIKOLITCH / DRIVER) - "THE

LONG TERM RESULT IS NATURAL RESOURCES,

NUCLEAR POWER, THINGS LIKE THAT. YOU
NEED TO THINK ABOUT FUTURE GENERATIONS,

NOT JUST US."

(SOT: JOHN BENNETT / TRUCK DRIVER) -

"SOMEBODY NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT

$4.94 FOR DIESEL. AND WHEN DID DIESEL
START COSTING MORE THAN GAS?"

Gore's proposal is one most motorists
would like to at least consider.

Otherwise, they realize that a trip to
the gas station will continue to cost

them more and more - all the while oil
producing countries will continue to

profit.

truck driver Farrell Kantsos, Jr. will
be held Friday.

VO-NAT The Lexington News-Gazette

published an obituary for Kantsos in
its online edition today.

The service will be held at 1:00
p.m. Friday in the Stuarts Draft Chapel
of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.

State Police say the
24-year-old Kantsos died at the scene
of a fiery tanker truck crash in
Roanoke Saturday night.

Since the crash, a memorial
was set up outside the WilcoHess gas
station in Raphine.

People have been coming by and
leaving flowers around his motorcycle
that is still parked there. Kantsos
worked for the company and lived in
Fairfield in Rockbridge County.

The school board voted tonight to
go forward with a facilities study.

An independent company will take
a look at every school in Bedford

They'll report back on things

School spokesman Ryan Edwards

nryan@wdbj7.com A clarification tonight on a
political story we aired yesterday.

In a report on the energy plan of
Democratic Congressional Candidate Sam
Rasoul, we said he doesn't support
additional offshore oil drilling.

In fact, Rasoul says he supports
drilling on 68 million acres of federal
land where oil and natural gas
companies already hold leases, but
haven't begun production.

About half of that acreage is

located off shore.

<< Good evening, I'm meteorologist
Robin Reed in the SkyTracker7 Forecast
Center. Fairly pleasant Thursday night
with clear skies and lows in the low
and mid 60s. Wind will be light. Also,
look for the full Buck Moon! Some areas
could see light patchy fog or haze
early Friday morning. Friday will be
another day with mainly sunny skies,
however, humidity will steadily
increase. Highs are forecast in the mid
and upper 80s. Partly cloudy skies
Friday night. In a nutshell, we'll see
variably cloudy skies this weekend with
occasional showers... but here's why...
Low pressure will slowly move up the
southeastern coast. By Friday morning,
the low will be situated off the
Georgia coast. Moderate rain could fall
across the coastal Carolina's this
weekend, something to keep in mind if
your travels will take you to the
beach. Closer to home, we're just

expecting occasional showers Saturday
and Sunday - not a washout! Our eastern
viewing area will be the best candidate
to experience more clouds and showers
over the weekend. Highs in the mid 80s
Saturday - closer to 90 Sunday.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Full
moon. Low: 62 FRIDAY: Mostly sunny.
More humid. High: 90 FRIDAY NIGHT:
Partly cloud and muggy. Low: 68 For

Blue Rocks vs. Avalanche But really the wins and losses :00 are only part of the equation at Salem
Memorial - it's all about the people
and tonight this large group of Kiwanis
club members from Roanoke lifted their
voices in unison to sing the national
anthem in the pregame.

Wilmington also did some lifting.
This Sergio Severino offering is
lifted way out of the park in top of

the first inning. The two out solo
blast by Brad Correll is basically all
the Blue Rocks would need in this one.

The Avs hard hitting Mark Ori -
the designated hitter would get one of
just 8 Avs hits on the *CG final Wilmington night, as Wilmington wins it 7 to 2.

7 The two teams play again tomorrow Salem night at 7:07.

TNT It wasn't just raining today it
was raining sideways and the wind was
blowing around 30 miles an hour. Add

to that the fact that with the wind the
temperature felt like it was 43 degrees
and you've got condition for anything
but golf.

Surprisingly, a couple of the
veterans stepped up and showed the
young boys how to get it done. Greg
Norman is right in the the thick of
things after shooting an even par round
of 70. He had two birides and two
bogeys and this great putt after a sand
save on the 17th hole.

Tom Watson, a former Open champ,
finished the day at four over par, but
that is a great score on a day like
today.

The defending champ Paidrig
Harrington also finished day one at
four over par. He's fighting a bad
wrist this week and probably shoudn't
even be playing.

One guys who is showing everyone
how to play in the majors is Rocco
Mediate. Today the fan favorite who
lost to Tiger Woods at the US Open in a
playoff is one under for the day tied
for the lead. He finished his round
birdie, birdie and overcame three
bogeys in the first five holes.

That's something Phil Mickelson
couldn't do - as he finished day one 10
shots behind Rocco at 9 over.
