OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7, Bedford County << As a parent of students in the
(END SOT) Forest area, Susan Branan says there's

a need for more classrooms.

Susan Branan/Bedford County
Parent: "We have so much new housing
going up and we've already got an
overcrowded elementary school."

Bedford's school board is trying
to get ahead of the problem.

They're looking at whether to
hire an independent company - to study
each school and report back on what's
needed.

Ryan Edwards/Bedford County
School Spokesman: "We do have aging
facilities. Facilities that have not
had much work done to them since the
1950's, 60's, 70's."

One of the bigger problems is
here at Forest Middle. The school was
built less than 15 years ago, but new
residents have led to overcrowding and
the school has had to add a dozen
mobile classrooms.

Edwards: "We want to provide
those children there with something
more than they have right now."

But Edwards says the study won't

be focused solely on Forest.

Edwards: "This will be a county
wide effort. We will look at
everything in our county and ways to
improve it."

The results may be used to seek
funding for a new middle or high
school.

Phillip Parnell says overcrowding
needs to be addressed, but new
buildings may not be the answer.

Phillip Parnell/Bedford County
Parent: "I think they need to add onto
the schools, personally, instead of
confusing everything and building more
schools."

Still, parents like Branan think
a study will highlight what's needed.

Branan: "I think it will probably
show that we need some new schools."

Answers that could make these
mobile classrooms a thing of the past.

WEATHER MINI OPEN

CK-WXBUG CURRENT CONDITIONS ROUNDUP

<< Good evening, I'm meteorologist
Robin Reed in the SkyTracker7 Forecast
Center. Fairly pleasant Thursday night
with clear skies and lows in the low

and mid 60s. Wind will be light. Also,
look for the full Buck Moon! Some areas
could see light patchy fog or haze
early Friday morning. Friday will be
another day with mainly sunny skies,
however, humidity will steadily
increase. Highs are forecast in the mid
and upper 80s. Partly cloudy skies
Friday night. In a nutshell, we'll see
variably cloudy skies this weekend with
occasional showers... but here's why...
Low pressure will slowly move up the
southeastern coast. By Friday morning,
the low will be situated off the
Georgia coast. Moderate rain could fall
across the coastal Carolina's this
weekend, something to keep in mind if
your travels will take you to the
beach. Closer to home, we're just
expecting occasional showers Saturday
and Sunday - not a washout! Our eastern
viewing area will be the best candidate
to experience more clouds and showers
over the weekend. Highs in the mid 80s
Saturday - closer to 90 Sunday.
THURSDAY NIGHT: Mostly clear. Full
moon. Low: 62 FRIDAY: Mostly sunny.
More humid. High: 90 FRIDAY NIGHT:
Partly cloud and muggy. Low: 68 For

mstevens@wdbj7.com I cannot think of a better person
to carry on the "local sports
tradition" that the late Roy Stanley,
Steve Mason and I have tried to
cultivate over the years. Travis shares
our values, our priorities, and the
sense of pride that so many of you have
in the sports teams in your hometowns.
I hope you'll all join me in welcoming
Travis into his new role as Sports
Director later this summer.

under less than ideal conditions at
Royal Birkdale.

TNT It wasn't just raining today it
was raining sideways and the wind was
blowing around 30 miles an hour. Add
to that the fact that with the wind the
temperature felt like it was 43 degrees
and you've got condition for anything
but golf.

Surprisingly, a couple of the old
guys stepped up. Greg Norman is right
in the the thick of things after
shooting an even par round of 70. He
had two birides and two bogeys and this
great putt after a sand save on the
17th hole.

Tom Watson, a former Open champ,
finished the day at four over par, but
that is a great score on a day like
today.

The defending champ Paidrig
Harrington also finished day one at
four over par. He's fighting a bad
wrist this week and probably shoudn't
even be playing.

One guys who is showing everyone
how to play in the majors is Rocco
Mediate. Today the fan favorite who
lost to Tiger Woods at the US Open in a
playoff is one under for the day tied
for the lead. He finished his round
birdie, birdie and overcame three
bogeys in the first five holes.

That's something Phil Mickelson
couldn't do - as he finished day one 10
shots behind Rocco at 9 over.
