Tomatoes finally have the green light
The F-D-A revoked its 6-week salmonella
warning yesterday, even though they
have yet to pinpoint the source of the
nation's largest outbreak of
food-bourne illness in the last
decade.
(SOT don't font phoner w/ gfx DR. DAVID
ACHESON/ASSOCIATE COMMISSIONER FOR
FOODS, FDA): "AS OF TODAY, FDA
OFFICIALS BELIEVE THAT CONSUMERS MAY
NOW ENJOY
ALL TYPES OF FRESH TOMATOES AVAILABLE
ON THE DOMESTIC MARKET."
Investigators STILL suspect tomatoes
may be to blame but said any that MAY
have been tainted are already off the
market.
(SOT CHUCK JACKSON/NEW YORK CITY): "I
HAVEN'T HAD THEM IN ALMOST 2 OR 4 WEEKS
AND I MISS THEM TERRIBLY - I REALLY
DO."
(POSSIBLE MOS)
12-hundred people have gotten sick from
the SAME strain of salmonella since
late April, but there have been NO
cases reported in 2 weeks. In late
May,
there were nearly 50 a DAY.
Tomato growers think they've gotten a
raw deal. Sales are down 40-percent
and
industry leaders say the outbreak's
cost them at least 100-million-dollars.
Tomatoes are back on store shelves but
have to battle public perception that
they're still a danger.
The investigation's far from over.
Authorities have shifted their focus to
peppers...Holding and testing incoming
shipments and focusing on large farms
that grow many different kinds of
produce but wash them all together.
(oncam)
The F-D-A's hottest lead now is a
certain processing plant in Mexico that
prepares peppers for shipment.
Inspctors could be testing there as
early as
today.

forecast in the lower 90s. Partly
cloudy skies Friday night. In a
nutshell, we'll see variably cloudy
skies this weekend with occasional
showers... but here's why... Low
pressure will slowly move up the
southeastern coast. By Friday morning,
the low will be situated off the
Georgia coast. Moderate rain could fall
across the coastal Carolina's this
weekend, something to keep in mind if
your travels will take you to the

expecting occasional showers Saturday

viewing area will be the best candidate
to experience more clouds and showers

Saturday - closer to 94 Sunday. FRIDAY:

Tomatoes finally have the green light
The F-D-A revoked its 6-week salmonella
warning yesterday, even though they
have yet to pinpoint the source of the
nation's largest outbreak of
food-bourne illness in the last
decade.
(SOT don't font phoner w/ gfx DR. DAVID
ACHESON/ASSOCIATE COMMISSIONER FOR
FOODS, FDA): "AS OF TODAY, FDA
OFFICIALS BELIEVE THAT CONSUMERS MAY
NOW ENJOY
ALL TYPES OF FRESH TOMATOES AVAILABLE
ON THE DOMESTIC MARKET."
Investigators STILL suspect tomatoes
may be to blame but said any that MAY
have been tainted are already off the
market.
(SOT CHUCK JACKSON/NEW YORK CITY): "I
HAVEN'T HAD THEM IN ALMOST 2 OR 4 WEEKS
AND I MISS THEM TERRIBLY - I REALLY
DO."
(POSSIBLE MOS)
12-hundred people have gotten sick from
the SAME strain of salmonella since
late April, but there have been NO
cases reported in 2 weeks. In late
May,
there were nearly 50 a DAY.
Tomato growers think they've gotten a
raw deal. Sales are down 40-percent
and
industry leaders say the outbreak's
cost them at least 100-million-dollars.
Tomatoes are back on store shelves but
have to battle public perception that
they're still a danger.
The investigation's far from over.
Authorities have shifted their focus to
peppers...Holding and testing incoming
shipments and focusing on large farms
that grow many different kinds of
produce but wash them all together.
(oncam)
The F-D-A's hottest lead now is a
certain processing plant in Mexico that
prepares peppers for shipment.
Inspctors could be testing there as
early as
today.
