Mountain View Cemetary has been around

since the 1800's... with over 400
graves. People can easily read the
headstones to find where their loved
one is buried.

But for search and rescue
professionals, finding a murder victim
in a grassy field like this one is like
looking for an unmarked grave.

Using a ground penetrating radar device
can help narrow down their search.

WE CAN SEE UNDER THE GROUND 4, 5, 6
FEET WITH 100 MEGA HURTZ ANTENNA, AND
WE CAN SEE THOSE BURIALS.

The 60-thousand dollar device belongs
to Radford University's Forensic
Science Institute. Archeologists are
teaching local law enforcement how it
to use it.

They say with its help, a body can be
detected in a matter of minutes.

Investigators just have to roll the
device over a surface and look for
peaks on the screeen.

IT SHOWS YOU THINGS THAT ARE
DIFFERENT, AND THEN YOU HAVE TO GO OFF
AND INTERPRET IT FROM THE SOFTWARE TO
SAY OH, THAT'S SHAPED LIKE A BODY."

The gpr has been around for 20 years,
but investigators have only recently
begun to use the equipment at crime
scenes.

Robert Speiden searches for missing
people across the state.

Like most search teams, he relies
mostly on his eyes, searching for clues
on the ground. He says a device like
this would come in handy.

IF SOMEONE BURIES A BODY AND DOESN'T
WANT US TO FIND IT THAT'S CALLED A
CLANDESTINE GRAVE, SO LOOKING AT SITES
WHERE WE KNOW WHERE THE BURIAL IS HELPS
US TO FORM SEARCH IMAGES TO LOOK FOR
BURIED PEOPLE."

ALTHOUGH THE DEVICE WORKS BEST IN
SANDY SOIL CONDITIONS, SCIENTISTS SAY
IT CAN ALSO BE USED TO DETECT HIDDEN
BURIALS IN OUR REGION.

One of the antennas is particularly
helpful in penetrating the clay-like
soil found in Southwest Virginia.

ANYTIME THERE'S A CONTRAST, WHETHER IT
BE A ROCK, A BODY, A BOOT, WHETER ITS A
KNIFE, YOU WILL GET A REFLECTION"

Because of the high cost, local police
departments don't have the device for
their immediate use just yet.

But it's a tool they hope will one day
become a main arm of their
investigative team.

John McCain's political offensive is
paying off.

(nats McCain ad in-box)

After unleashing a string of negative
ads last week, mocking Barack Obama's

starpower and soaring rhetoric, the
Arizona senator has drawn even in the

latest Gallup poll.

(nats)

With just 3 months left till election
day, the candidates kick off another

week devoted to the economy. Their
differences over what to do about high

gas prices have come to symbolize the
debate.

For months, Obama has opposed all
off-shore drilling.

(SOT QUICK don't font): "FIRST OF ALL,

LET'S MAKE THE OIL COMPANIES DRILL

WHERE THEY ALREADY HAVE LAND."

And for months McCain has hammered him
for being unwilling to try ANYTHING to

solve the energy crisis.

(SOT SEN. JOHN MCCAIN/R-PRESIDEMNTIAL

CANDIDATE): "WE NEED OIL DRILLING AND
WE

NEED IT NOW OFFSHORE - WE NEED IT NOW.
HE HAS CONSISTENTLY OPPOSED IT. HE

HAS OPPOSED NUCLEAR POWER. HE HAS
OPPOSED RE-PROCESSING. HE HAS OPPOSED

STORAGE. THE ONLY THING I'VE HEARD
HIM SAY IS THAT WE SHOULD INFLATE OUR

TIRES."

But Obama softened over the weekend,
saying he WOULD consider drilling

off-shore as part of energy reform.
And while he insisted this was just a

compromise, not a policy switch...

(SOT . SEN. BARACK OBAMA/D-PRESIDENTIAL

CANDIDATE): "THIS WASN'T REALLY A NEW

POSITION...."

Most observers expect the McCain
campaign - riding fresh momentum in the
polls

- to try to capitalize.

(SOT EAMON JAVERS/POLITICO.COM): "HE'S

GOING TO SEIZE THIS ONE AND SAY 'OBAMA

SAID NO DRILLING, NOW HE SAYS MAYBE
DRILLING - THAT'S A FLIP-FLOP.' IT'S
UP

TO THE VOTERS TO DECIDE WHETHER THEY
AGREE WITH THAT OR NOT AND WHETHER THEY

CARE."

(oncam)

TBD - possibly disputed delegates
resolved?

In 1970, the average U-S adult consumed
16-and-a-half pounds of food a
week....By 2006, that had risen to
18-point-2 pounds.

And the kinds of food feeding the

increase are the same that make people
fatter...unhealthy oils and cheeses,
and a big surge in fast foods

Congress wants a closer look at the

Some recent research suggested the drug
resulted in higher cancer rates...Now a

Mountain View Cemetary has been around
since the 1800's... with over 400
graves. People can easily read the
headstones to find where their loved
one is buried.

But for search and rescue
professionals, finding a murder victim
in a grassy field like this one is like

looking for an unmarked grave.

Using a ground penetrating radar device
can help narrow down their search.

WE CAN SEE UNDER THE GROUND 4, 5, 6
FEET WITH 100 MEGA HURTZ ANTENNA, AND
WE CAN SEE THOSE BURIALS.

The 60-thousand dollar device belongs
to Radford University's Forensic
Science Institute. Archeologists are
teaching local law enforcement how it
to use it.

They say with its help, a body can be
detected in a matter of minutes.

Investigators just have to roll the
device over a surface and look for
peaks on the screeen.

IT SHOWS YOU THINGS THAT ARE
DIFFERENT, AND THEN YOU HAVE TO GO OFF
AND INTERPRET IT FROM THE SOFTWARE TO
SAY OH, THAT'S SHAPED LIKE A BODY."

The gpr has been around for 20 years,
but investigators have only recently

begun to use the equipment at crime
scenes.

Robert Speiden searches for missing
people across the state.

Like most search teams, he relies
mostly on his eyes, searching for clues
on the ground. He says a device like
this would come in handy.

IF SOMEONE BURIES A BODY AND DOESN'T
WANT US TO FIND IT THAT'S CALLED A
CLANDESTINE GRAVE, SO LOOKING AT SITES
WHERE WE KNOW WHERE THE BURIAL IS HELPS
US TO FORM SEARCH IMAGES TO LOOK FOR
BURIED PEOPLE."

ALTHOUGH THE DEVICE WORKS BEST IN
SANDY SOIL CONDITIONS, SCIENTISTS SAY
IT CAN ALSO BE USED TO DETECT HIDDEN
BURIALS IN OUR REGION.

One of the antennas is particularly
helpful in penetrating the clay-like
soil found in Southwest Virginia.

ANYTIME THERE'S A CONTRAST, WHETHER IT
BE A ROCK, A BODY, A BOOT, WHETER ITS A
KNIFE, YOU WILL GET A REFLECTION"

Because of the high cost, local police
departments don't have the device for
their immediate use just yet.

But it's a tool they hope will one day
become a main arm of their
investigative team.
