Authorities have NOT issued mandatory
evacuation orders but residents here
know the drill.
(SOT DAVE GARDENER): "I SPENT 18 DAYS
IN MISSISSIPPI AFTER KATRINA CAME
THROUGH AND I WAS DOWN THERE WHEN RITA
HIT, SO I'M READY TO TRY ANOTHER ONE."
(SOT MOS): "IF THINGS GET A LITTLE BIT
DRAMATIC WE'LL PACK UP AND GET OUT OF
TOWN."
Officials say the majority of
residents'll try to ride out the storm,
but that
doesn't mean they're not preparing for
the worst.
Beaches that were packed yesterday are
deserted and store shelves have been
cleared of essentials.
Arnulfo Munoz got some of the last
plywood available to board up his
hotel.
(SOT ARNULFO MUNOZ/HOTEL OWNER):
"AROUND HERE YOU NEVER KNOW, SO I HAVE
TO BE
PREPARED."
(Stand-Up/Joel Brown/Galveston, Texas)
THERE'S NEVER A GOOD TIME FOR A BAD
STORM, BUT THIS IS THE HEIGHT OF
TOURIST
SEASON. GALVESTON'S POPULATION
TYPICALLY DOUBLES IN THE SUMMER MONTHS
AND
THAT MEANS A LOT MORE PEOPLE THAN
USUAL COULD BE AT RISK.
(SOT CARYL COBURN/TOURIST): "I'M WITH
TEENAGERS AND THEY WANTED TO STAY AND
RIDE IT OUT, BUT I WAS TELLING THEM, I
DIDN'T THINK IT'D BE QUITE AS FUN AS
THEY THOUGHT."
(nats cheers)
Not everyone's so cautious. The
Warwicks have been celebrating family
reunions down here for 43 years and
plan on staying for a 44th.
(SOT no name available): "WE'RE NOT
GIVING UP - THIS IS JUST OUR FIRST DAY.
WITH THE STORM BREWING, WE'RE NOT
GIVING UP - WE'RE STICKING!"
The storm's not ALL bad news. With
only 3 inches of rain since June 1st,
the
region's been hit hard by drought, and
Edouard should take care of that...but
officials worry they could get TOO much
of a good thing.

Texas.

The Olympic torch is in the
home-stretch to Beijing for Friday's
opening
ceremony.
The US swim team's already here.
America's highest medal hopeful --
Michael Phelps -- kept a low profile,
eluding female fans.
Last minute preparations are underway.
They're scrubbing down the countdown
clock in Tiananmen Square, but cleaning
up Beijing's air is the big issue.
A thick blanket of haze covers the
capital, but Chinese officials say air
quality remains at safe levels.
Authorities say strict measures like
shutting down hundreds of factories and
ordering half the city's cars off the
road have helped.
Residents say they've noticed the
change.

LOCATOR: Kashgar, China
China has stepped up security after
Monday's terror attack by suspected
Islamic militants along its border
that left 16 police dead.
Officials insist the Games will be
protected -- and so will the millions
of
fans who have come to watch.

I'D LOVE TO SEE THE U-S WIN THE MEDAL

PEOPLE COMPETE TO THE LEVEL THEY CAN
AND THAT'S WHAT THE OLYMPICS ARE ALL
ABOUT.
A chance for international athletes --
and China itself -- to perform on the
world stage.
