the name of a man who drowned in the
New River yesterday.

Office says Samuel Matthew Harless was
fishing with a friend near the railroad
trestle over Hazel Hollow Road.
Harless was wading in the
river, went under and never
re-surfaced.
Harless was 23 years old. He
lived in Shawsville.

We're now up to 25 confirmed cases
of e-coli infection...and at least 69
others have symptoms.

least 11 of them were sickened after
eating contaminated ground beef.
This is what led to a recall of more
than 153-thousand pounds of frozen
hamburger from S & S Foods out of
California.

File But health officials are still trying
: to figure out how the others scouts at
the Goshen Reservation were infected.
At this point they are awaiting lab
findings and interview results from
those at the boy scout camp two weeks
ago.
The strain of e-coli they contracted
can be very serious...eight of the
scouts had to hospitalized.

not sold in grocery stores.
The hamburger was distrubted for food
service and instutional use.

Keith -- undercooked contaminated
ground beef is the most common cause of
e-coli infection.
It's important to point out, cooking
the hamburger at least 160 degrees can
kill the bacteria.
KEITH'S Question: Joy can an infected
person spread it to others?
Yes...for up to three weeks or more,
that's why it's handwashing is so
important.

the death of convicted murder Randall
Lee Smith.

May 9 Virginia State Police say he died
:00 of accidental causes while at New River
Valley Jail.
Smith was being held there for
allegedly shooting two men in the
Jefferson National Forest in May.
He crashed a stolen truck as he
tried to flee the scene.
Smith was taken to Carilion
Roanoke Memorial Hospital and was
released three days later.
The next day Smith was found
unresponsive in his cell.
Officers performed C-P-R, but he
was later pronounced dead at a hospital
in Pulaski.
The medical examiner determined
Smith died as a result of complications
from the injuries in the crash.
Scott Johnston and his friend
Sean Farmer survived the ordeal.

Testimony is underway in the
civil trial involving Victoria Osteen
(OH-STEEN), Pastor Joel Osteen's wife.
She's accused of assaulting a
Continental Airlines flight attendant
in 2005.
The attendant claims Osteen threw
her against a bathroom door during an
outburst over a stain on her
first-class seat on the plane.
The crewmember is asking for 10
percent of Osteen's net worth, claiming
she now suffers from anxiety that
includes hemorrhoids, and that her
faith was affected.
Osteen has already paid a
three-thousand dollar fine from the
F-A-A.
She says she paid the fine, to
end the matter, not because she was
guilty.

Iowa State Fair officials saw
their biggest opening day yet, when
they tried to set a world record for
the most corndogs eaten at once.
Maybe it was the free admission
from five to 8:30 this morning that
brought in the crowds... but it was
probably the golf carts full of
corndogs.
About 15-thousand people showed
up, much more than the expected
8-thousand.
So, they couldn't feed everyone
at the 2008 Corndog Chomp, but they fed
enough to break a record, as long as
Guinness accepts it.
