murderer who died in custody in the New
River Regional Jail died of accidental
causes.

May 9 Randall Lee Smith was being held for
allegedly shooting two men in the
Jefferson National Forest in May.
He crashed a stolen truck as he
tried to flee the scene.
Smith was brought to the Carilion
Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he was
released three days later.
The next day Smith was found
unresponsive in his cell.
Officers performed C-P-R, but he was
later pronounced dead at the hospital
in Pulaski.
In a state police release today, the
medical examiner ruled out foul play in
the death. It reported Smith died as a
result of complications from the
injuries in the crash.
In the 1980's, Smith was convicted of
killing two hikers in the same area
where the two men were shot in May.

the 21 confirmed cases at the Goshen
Reservation are linked to a recall of
frozen hamburger products.
The beef came from the California based
S & S Foods.
Meanwhile, the number of sick children
keeps going up.
Now 73 people have reported symptoms.
Eight children were also hospitalized.
The Virginia Department of Health says
it is still investigating, because not
all of the cases are related to the
recall.

river, went under and did not surface.

an agreement to trade the three-time
NFL most valuable
player to the New York Jets for draft
picks.
Details of the trade were not
immediately available, but the deal
ends Favre's 16-year career with the
Packers.
Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum
said there would be another transaction
regarding
quarterback Chad Pennington, who spent
his first eight seasons with New York.

Football Extra standouts are currently
on the Ferrum Roster.
They have all been part of the
first 24 years of Friday Football
Extra.
WE are preparing for the 25th
season starting on August 22nd.
The Christiansburg Blue Demons
will play that first week, and will do
so with 12 returning starters.
Tim Cromer's club missed the
playoffs last season after going to the
post- season 4 straight years.
Christiansburg would like to go
back to the playoffs this season, but
the schedule isn't easy, with road
games at Bassett, Patrick Henry, and
Salem. But the Blue Demons feel up to
the challenge.

scrimmages.
Tech will hold 3 scrimmages this
pre-season and they will be held in
Lane Stadium.

scrimmages were open to the public.
The Hokies will scrimmage on
August 12th, the 16th, and again on
August 22nd.
Coach Beamer likes the atmosphere
that his players will get to perform
in, but have fans in the stadium.

This weekend at Watkins Glen
Martin Truex Junior should seem a
little more relaxed, and Dale Earnhardt
Incorporated should be breathing a huge
sigh of relief.
Truex has agreed to a contract
extension with D-E-I that keeps him in
the Number 1 car through 2009.
The 2 sides had a mutual option
for next season but Truex hadn't agreed
to stay on, testing the free agent
market, he is now on board for next
year and a long term deal is being
worked on.
Truex made the Chase for the
Championship a season ago.
He is 17th in the point standings this
season, with 5 races to go before they
make the cut-off of the 12 Drivers who
will race for the title.
