Strickland Junior. He was visiting the
park with a youth group from Sycamore
Baptist Church out of Gretna.
After talking with Marvin's family last
night, park officials got the
impression he did NOT know how to swim.

<< While in the water, parents at Smith
Mountain Lake State Park are holding on
to their kids a little tighter.
Yesterday afternoon, Strickland was
found unconcious while swimming. An
adult with the church group told park
officials he had been missing for 15
minutes.
Lifeguards began searching for Marvin
around 2-30.
APPROXIMATELY 20 TO 30 MINUTES LATER,
THE CHILD WAS FOUND IN 6 TO 7 FEET OF
WATER, NEAR THE LOCATION WHERE HE WAS
LAST SEEN."
Marvin was swimming between red and
blue bowies, in a designated swimming
zone.
Witness believe he was trying to grab a
float for a younger member of the group
when he went under.
Rescuerers pulled him out of the water
and performed CPR... before taking him
to the hospital.
FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF THE CHILD ARRIVED
AT THE HOSPITAL TO BE WITH HIM, DESPITE
ALL EFFORTS TO SAVE MARVIN, HE WAS
LIFELESS WHEN HE ARRIVED AT BEDFORD

About 80 people were at the beach
yesterday when the drowning happened..
with 3 or 4 lifeguards standing by.
Park officials say those who assisted
in the search acted quickly.

CLEAR LIKE THE POOL WOULD BE, EVERYONE
REACTED THE WAY THEY NEED DO.">>

As far as park officials are
concerned, at this point they don't see
any negligence on the part of the
people who were supervising the
children.
They also tell me, all of the
life guards are between the ages of 16
and 26 and are Red Cross certified.

Roanoke's Old Southwest neighborhood
earlier this week was not a victim of
foul play.
That word this morning from
Roanoke Police.

morning beneath a line of trees on
First Street.
Police say the man was a 38-
year- old transient. They are not
releasing his name at the request of
his family.
The Medical Examiner's office
will rule on a cause of death, after
toxicology tests are completed, but an
autopsy did rule out foul play.

positive I-D on the woman killed in a
car fire last month.

July 23 37-year-old Benita Donnella Woods
was killed July 23rd.
Police say she drove into a field
off Ole Turnpike Road. The hot engine
in the dry field apparently caused her
Chevy Malibu to catch fire.
The car had Kentucky plates and
belonged to her mother.
Police say Woods was staying with
a friend in Lynchburg at the time of
the accident.
Investigators are still waiting
for a toxicology report on Woods, but
they've determined the cause of death
was smoke inhalation.

Black Sea. The fighting started -- when
Georgia's military attempted to regain
control over the breakaway province of
South Ossetia.

Ten peacekeepers from the Russian
military were killed when Georgian
shells hit their barracks.

Russian forces are playing a
peacekeeping role in South Ossetia. In
1992 the pro-Russian province broke
ties with Georgia and started running
its own affairs Georgia's president has
vowed to take back control.

He may have been waiting for Russia's
Prime Minister Vladmir Putin to leave
for the Olympics. In Beijing Friday
Putin and President Bush discussed the
situation at a luncheon.
(NAT) - TANKS
The offensive could lead to a broader
conflict. Shortly after Georgian
troops crossed the border -- Russian
tanks moved into position to help
defend the province.
(STANDUP BRIDGE: Joel Brown / CBS NEWS
/ THE WHITE HOUSE) - "Georgia's a
staunch U-S ally and the Bush
administration is calling on all sides
to stand down. The U-S plans to send
an envoy to the region -- to help calm
the situation."
A spokesman for Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice says -- she has spoken
to the parties involved... And she's
urging all sides to call a cease fire.
There has already been one 'temporary'
cease fire -- giving people the chance
to get out of the capital of South
Ossetia -- and across the border into
Russia.
The International Red Cross warns of
more trouble ahead. Officials there
say, the provincial capital's main
hospital has stopped functioning -- and
ambulances can't reach the wounded.

At least six people were killed
when a passenger train from Poland
crashed into a collapsed bridge in
eastern Czech Republic.
More than a dozen others were seriously
injured.
Authorities say the wreck occurred
when parts of a bridge that's under
re-construction tumbled onto the track,
just as the train was approaching.
A railway spokesman says the train
engineer was traveling 85 miles-
per-hour when he slammed on the
emergency brakes, but couldn't avoid
hitting the debris.
The engine and first six cars
derailed.
About 400 people were on board.

child.
Edwards says his wife Elizabeth
found out about the affair two years
ago, before she was diagnosed with

Center. THIS EVENING-TONIGHT: A
spectacular night for grilling or
getting the yardwork done. Clear skies
and light winds will mean another night
of lows in the 50s. Could see a bit of
patchy fog in the NRV and Highlands,
but shouldn't be widespread. SATURDAY:
An area of high pressure will move from
Missouri and Iowa, east into across the
area. This will lead to another day of
clear skies, low humidity and coolish
temperatures. Highs will end up in the
mid 80s by the afternoon. SUNDAY: A
front will try to work into the region
with limited impact. Only an isolated
shower can be expected in the NW
mountains Sunday. Otherwise, another
day of sunshine and highs in the low
80s. NEXT WEEK: Generally, the forecast
remains dry with limited rain chances
and below normal temperatures. Highs
will remain in the low 80s through
Wednesday, then climb into the upper
80s by Friday of next week. We can also
expect an increase in humidity during

Wall Street, with big gains for the
week -- thanks to a huge slide in
oil prices.
The Dow Jones industrial average
rose 303 points to close at 11,734.

Aiken at 8:08a.m. on 08/08/08.
Aiken writes on his Web site that
mother and the baby are both doing
well.
Aiken met Jaymes Foster while

Aiken's publicist told People magazine
earlier that Foster was artifically
inseminated. She and Aiken plan to
raise the boy together.

the 2008 World Sauna Championship.
The men's preliminary round began
today inside a sauna where the mercury
reached 230 degrees Fahrenheit.
Every 30 seconds, water is poured
on a hot stove to release more steam
into the room.
The last person to walk out of
the sauna without any help is the
winner.
The competition continues on
Saturday.
