Team officials and state media
say a knife-wielding Chinese man
attacked two relatives of a coach for
the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball team.
One of the victims was killed and
one was injured in the attack.
The man then committed suicide by
throwing himself from the second story

The brutal attack shortly after
midday was all the more shocking
because of the rarity of violent crimes

OQ=NEWS 7, PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY. << Marvin Strickland was an active
(END SOT) member of Sycamore Baptist Church. In
fact, he was with his youth group from
Sycamore Baptist Thursday afternoon
during his trip to Smith Mountain Lake.
We sat down with his Youth
Director, Kathy Molihan, who shared a
few memories with us.
Kathy Molihan: "His family's
going to miss him, but this community
and this church is going to miss him
just as well."
Molihan works with dozens of kids
in her youth program, but she says you
could always sense Strickland's deep
devotion to God.
Molihan: "He's had some of the
prettiest prayers I believe I've ever
heard from a child."
Strickland was in the youth JOY
choir.
He took his role in the
congregation seriously.
Molihan: "He was here early on
Sunday Mornings. Him and his
grandmother, they would always be
pretty much close to the first two that
was here. And when you came through
the door, he was always sitting in the
same spot."
Witnesses say Strickland was
helping another child find a floating
device when he drowned.
Molihan says he was always
thinking of others.
Molihan: "He always seemed
concerned about other children. He's
just one child that you could always
depend upon."
Strickland was a rising 7th
grader at Gretna Middle School.
Molihan believes he would have
made a great teacher.
Molihan: "I taught him in Sunday
School, and he would always be the
first with the answer. He always
seemed to know the right answers to
give."
As the church deals with his
loss, Molihan says there's going to be
a big void in the Sanctuary.
Molihan: "He wasn't my child, but
he was close to my child and I'm very
sorry that this has happened. We'll
miss him here. We'll miss him here at
Sycamore."
Visitation for Marvin Strickland
will be Saturday night from 7 to 8:30
at the Colbert-Moran Funeral Home in
Gretna. His funeral will be Sunday
afternoon at 2:00 here at Sycamore
Baptist Church.

Many families heard the news when

The incident put parents on high

how to swim.
Instead of sitting and relaxing,
many parents decided to spend more time
