Russia's president has ordered his
military to stop its attacks inside the
Republic.
The halt comes just one day after
President Bush
demanded an end to the fighting.

been punished enough. He's ordered a
halt to the air and ground attacks --
five days after they started.
(NAT) -
But the Georgian government says --
Russian planes are still making bombing
runs. Russia's president has told his
forces to defend themselves if
necessary.
(NAT) -
More than 2-thousand were reported
killed in the fighting that began when
Georgia tried to take back control of
South Ossetia -- a breakway province.
Russian troops responded almost
immediately -- later moving into other
parts
of Georgia, taking control of a key
town that split the country in half.

NEWS / THE WHITE HOUSE) - "Russia's
decision to halt military attacks comes
just one day after President Bush
demanded an end to the fighting.
Georgia is a staunch U-S ally -- and
the
White House wants it respected as a
sovereign nation."

SECURITY ADVISOR) -
French President Nicolas Sarkozy
brought a similar message to Moscow
from the
countries of the European Union. He
welcomed the Russian pullback as he
arrived in the Russian capital to
mediate.
Russian officials are calling for
Georgia's president to resign -- and
order
his forces out of the two breakaway
provinces at the heart of the dispute.

But Georgia's president isn't making
any promises. He spoke before
thousands
of people gathered for a patriotic
rally -- in the republic's capital
city.

remembering a soldier from
Christiansburg who was killed in Iraq.

The Department of Defense says
Sargeant Kenneth B. Gibson died
Saturday when an improvised bomb
exploded near his position.
He was 25-years-old, and based
out of Schofield (SKO-field) Barracks
in Hawaii.

page, Kenneth Gibson graduated from
Christiansburg High School in 2001.
Administrators at the school tell
News-7 there were a lot of tears at the
school this morning.
Many teachers remember Gibson from
his days as a student.
Gibson was also married.
His family told us they're not yet
ready to talk publicly.

murder.

AH'-zar) was ORIGINALLY charged with
nine counts of attempted murder and
nine counts of felonious assault in
connection with the attack on March

charges were dismissed.
At the time, Taheri- Azar said his
motive was to avenge Muslim deaths
around the world.

Prosecutors say the two visited
their mother's house over the weekend.
The judge sided with defense
lawyers, who called the case "a tempest

Michigan Sheriff's officer while he and
his partner attempted to serve a
subpoena to a friend of the mayor's in
late July.
The judge put Kilpatrick in jail
last Thursday after he found out the

WITHOUT notifying authorities.
Kilpatrick was released on Friday.

getting shot during a robbery in
Danville.
Now police are looking for a
suspect...
They say around 11 o' clock last
night, a man went into the Fas Mart on
Piney Forest Road with a gun and
demanded money from the clerk.
A fight ensued between the robber
and the clerk's relative, then the
suspect shot the relative.
Police say the bullet went
through his left arm and into his back,
but he should be okay.
The suspect took off on foot with
some money from the register.

Housing Authority has cancelled a
public hearing so they have more time
to think about the situation.

Polar bears got a chilly treat in the
form of a block of ice filled with
tasty goodies.
Under the blazing sun and
temperatures close to 104 degrees, two
polar bears tore their way into the
huge block of ice.
Once they broke it apart, the bears
got their reward.....apples, sausages
and fresh fish.
But for the Japanese snow monkeys..the
task was a bit tougher.
Their bananas, apples and oranges were
buried a little too deep inside the icy
block.
The giving of frozen treats is an
annual event at the zoo.

will be taking place this Thursday
night here at Your Hometown Station in
the Community Room at 6pm.

auction items up for grabs--including
baseballs signed by Don Zimmer, Harmon
Killebrew, Yogi Berra, and present day
stars Brandon Inge and Ryan Zimmerman.
There will also be lots of
Virginia Tech and UVA
memorabilia--items autographed by Dave
Leitao, Al Groh, Frank Beamer and even
former Hokies Eddie Royal and Andre
Davis.
This is the 7th year of the
auction.
But it's the first year that the
auction and captain's choice golf
tournament have been held on the same
weekend-- minus the celebrity golf
outing.

The captain's choice golf
event takes place Sunday morning at 8-
30 at Hanging Rock in Salem. There are
still spots available.
Of course, all the proceed go to
scholarships for deserving students.

has been in existence for just over
three years.
It's benefited countless youngsters in
that time, including 14 year old Parker
Davis, a Salem High School golfer who
has qualified for the First Tee Open at
Pebble Beach in a little more than two
weeks.
The tournament includes 78
junior players, along with 78 players
from the PGA's Champions Tour.

CAM The Japanese recently auctioned

VO-NAT A new premium grape called the
"Ruby Roman" attracted a high bid of
nearly 1,000 dollars for one bunch.
Each grape is more than one inch
long, is very sweet and easy to peel.
The company that produced the
grape spent more than 10 years in
development.
It says about 1500 bunches of
Ruby Roman grapes will be shipped to
stores by mid- September.
