Hurricane Opal, which is now a tropical depression, is responsible for three
The powerful storm crashed into the Florida panhandle last night with winds
reaching as high as 144 miles an hour.
It then roar through Albama.
Hundreds of homes in both states were destroyed or sustained major damage.
The storm also knocked out power to almost a million homes in five states.
Opal was the strongest hurricane to hit the Gulf coast since Camille in
Art Rascon has more from Panama City, Florida.

Here in western Virginia the remnants of hurricane Opal have brought high
winds and periods of heavy rain.
Some small streams have left their banks, but so far there are no reports of

Valley this morning.
Melanie, we're enjoying a break in the weather right now, but since the
bands of rain began moving through our area, we have seen some heavy
precipitation, and damaging winds.

((The water is rising in western Virginia. while periods of heavy rain are
creating substantial run-off, most of the area's creeks and streams remain
within their banks.
High winds hold the potential to damage power lines, but so far Appalachian
Power reports only scattered outtages.
National Weather Service Forecasters in Blacksburg say we can expect more of
the same as the storm continues to move northward.

Reports from Galax indicate that four streets have been blocked off
there... where the storm drains have been unable to handle the run- off.

The rain may have been the reason a small Toyota compact car spun out of
control, and flipped several times on Interstate 81 this morning.
Stephanie Rico (Reek-oh) was driving the car and was transported to Lewis
It happened near the Dixie Caverns Exit in the northbound lanes.
Police say the car hydroplaned, flipped and landed in the median.
The hospital will not release information on Rico's condition. No charges
have been filed.

He phoned C-N-N'S Larry King Live last night saying he's angry over what he
called the misconceptions caused by prosecutors.
He says they constantly distorted the evidence to make him look bad.

Police are looking for two men who wanted in connection to the armed robbery
of a Lynchburg restaurant.
At about ten o'clock last night, the suspects tossed a brick through the
window of the Shoney's on Langhorne Road, and then held a knife to the

A cat bite has led to rabies shots for three members of a Brookneal family
and staff members at a Lynchburg animal hospital who treated the cat.
State health officials say the eleven- year- old cat bit its owner last
month and was found to have rabies when it died last week.
All those who came into contact with the unvaccinated cat now have to
undergo a series of shots to prevent catching the fatal disease.
Another cat owned by the family also was not vaccinated and had to be put

A controversial plan for a new hospital in the New River Valley clears
The Southwest Virginia Health Systems Agency last night recommended Radford
Community Hospital be allowed to build a replacement facility.
