north of the HENRY County line.
A creek was threatened, some residents evacuated, elementary school
children diverted, but nobody was hurt- -beyond the driver who suffered a few
brusies.
And the father and son Canadian truck drivers who got caught hauling coke
from Texas were sentenced today.
Claude Guay got 24 years to serve; his son, Daniel got 20 years.

That's the same time Fork Mountain residents were allowed back into their
homes.
Norman Craig was treated and released from Franklin Memorial Hospital, and
went back to the sight of the wreck just hours after.
He's been charged with reckless driving.

allowed off.
Instead, they were told to sit tight until a Sheriff's Deputy arrived.
At around eight- twenty officials decided to transfer the children to Ferrum
Elementary.
Teachers say the kids spent the morning watching movies, playing games and
exercising.

Police have charged a Pulaski County man with malicious wounding for
allegedly shooting at them and critically wounding another man.
Sheriff's deputies were called to a camper on Carl C. Wright's property in
Hiwassee around eight o-clock last night.
They say 67 year- old Lilborn Linwood Foutz fired one round at them from the
camper before they were able to talk him out and arrest him.
Foutz allegedly shot Wright four times.
Police say Foutz had been drinking and claims he doesn't remember the
shooting.
Wright is in intensive care.

arrested an armed man before an appearance by the Pope.
William Wylong, was dressed as a National Park Service ranger, carrying a
loaded .357 magnum in a holster.

The local police Commissioner says the 45-year-old postal worker apparently
was suffering from "emotional distress."

rocked the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
One official says many more people are feared dead in the rubble of
collapsed buildings.

Mile Sportsman division race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Phillips was a
race car fabricator by trade and a volunteer fireman. He is survived by his

The accident occurred in turn four on lap 17 of the 67 lap event.
Phillips and another driver failed to slow at the top of the track, and
Phillips car went roof first into the wall and slid down the fence.
The entire roof was ripped off the car on the front stretch, in one of the
most viscous crashes in track history.
It was the ninth fatality at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Phillips had just
won the pole for the race and it was his 17th NASCAR Sportsman start.
