But West says she knew the young man because his mother used to live next door to her.

In Roanoke last night, a woman was shot near eighth and Moorman street.
One witness who did NOT want to be identified says the woman was trying to buy crack cocaine when three shots were fired.
A witness says the woman was shot in the chest, but appeared to be conscious when the rescue squad arrived.
The victim was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital and was being evaluated.
Police have not released her name and are still investigating.

Richards and Wolcott say they aren't sure what happened to all of the money.
But Wolcott has signed and endorsed Justice House checks, despite the fact that her name wasn't on the bank's signature card.
There are also two different versions of Wolcott's signature on the checks.
Many of the residents are on fixed incomes and have small children.
They say they feel abandoned and they're not quite sure where to turn.
Five years ago the Virginia Mennonite Board of Missions thought they had sold the building to the community and four trustees-- one of which was David Hayden.
But records show Hayden never completed the deal and the city still lists the Mennonite Church as the owner of the building.
In January, Hayden severed all ties with Justice House and he told News- 7 that he had transferred power to Roanoke Area Ministries.
RAM-House officials flatly deny that. They say they were asked to run the facility, but decided against it.
No one is quite sure who is responsible for Justice House right now.
Many of the residents say they don't want to leave. But they might; at least until someone is put in charge.

In her single minded ambitious drive to the top, her sweet hubby becomes a liability , so Suzanne seduces a dim teenager and convinces him to kill the husband.
One of the movie's strengths is the supporting cast, but Kidman's character is just too irritatingly dense. ((I BELIEVE MR. GORBACHEV-YOU KNOW, THE MAN WHO RAN RUSSIA FOR SO LONG-I BELIEVE THAT HE'D STILL BE IN POWER TODAY IF HE'D DONE WHAT SO MANY PEOPLE SUGGESTED AND HAD THAT BIG PURPLE THING TAKEN OFF HIS FOREHEAD.))
Even with its bits of black humor and cynical irony, "To Die For" only gets a "B".

Danville police are investigating the death of a 14- year old as a homicide.

Police were called to 450- Henry Street at about 11:30- yesterday morning.
Mary West was inside her apartment when she heard a loud knock and saw Kevin Warren standing on her porch with blood coming from his mouth, nose and neck.
Authorities say Warren had been shot.
The teen did not live at the residence.
But West says she knew the young man because his mother used to live next door to her.

In Roanoke, a woman was shot last night near eighth and Moorman street.
One witness who did not want to be identified says the woman was trying to buy crack cocaine when three shots rang out.
A witness says the woman was shot in the chest but appeared to be conscious when the rescue squad arrived.
The victim was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital and was being evaluated.
Police have not released her name and are still investigating.

The case continues against a 17- year old Halifax County man accused of pulling the trigger in a fatal drive by shooting.

Anthony Scott Whitlock was killed February 13th at Westside Trailer Court.
A motive for the murder is unkown but, prosecutor John Greenbacker told the jury he has witnesses who identified Kevin Chase Newman as the man in the car.
Newman's attorney countered by saying the car in question did not belong to his client and had tinted windows.

The sister of a former inmate at Greensville Correctional Center is accusing the prison of abuse in the death of her brother.
Ten inmates have died there since December

Jane Schaffer says her brother, David Arnold Smith, was serving a life sentence for first degree murder.
He had served 11 years in several Virginia prisons before dying in March at Greensville Correctional Facility.
She says conditions were poor and her brother did not get proper care.
She did not want her face to appear on camera.

Smith died of lung cancer.
Schaffer says his condition was made worse because of neglect and bad living conditions.
Smith filed grievances with prison wardens-- but Schaffer says nothing was done.
Meanwhile, corrections officials say there's nothing suspicious about the inmate deaths.
Officials say quote, "Greensville has a major hospital. The inmates coming into the system are sick, therefore it's not unusual for Greensville to have a higher number of deaths."

In other news regarding prisons, the Virginia Department of Corrections is considering running a criminal background check on visitors as a way of improving security. That could mean checking the backgrounds of as many as 240-thousand people.
