Obesity researchers say the F-D-A is slowing down their fight to slim down
America, by not approving drugs that can produce dramatic weight loss in people
otherwise unable to lose weight.
They say the F-D-A treats obesity as a moral failure-- rather than a
disease that kills 300-thousand people each year.
The criticism comes during a meeting of the North American Association for
the Study of Obesity.
The organization believes obesity is a physiological disorder-- not the
result of failed willpower.

Meanwhile the percentage of overweight children has more than doubled in
the last 30 years.
That translates to four-point-seven million children who are heavier than
they should be.
And heavy children tend to become heavy adults-- at an increased risk for a
number of diseases.
But experts say it's a bad idea to put kids on diets-- that can interfere
with their normal growth.
Instead, the answer is more activity.
