Roanoke City Police are defending the actions of an officer accused of
assaulting a man and his seven year old son.

James Thompson says he and his son, Adam, were attending the Express hockey
game at the Roanoke Civic Center this weekend when the alleged abuse occurred.
Thompson says they were standing by the rink when the officer ordered them
to leave.
Thompson says the officer roughed him up and pushed his son.
But according to police, Thompson refused to leave a restricted area and
became verbally abusive.
Thompson filed assault charges against the officer.
Officals are not releasing the officer's name--a court date has not been
set.

A stop at a suspected drug house turned deadly for a Washington State
sheriff's deputy.
Deputies were serving a search warrant when gunfire erupted.
Apparently the deputies went up to a house and announced they were police.
A man and woman inside the house then began shooting.
The wounded officer was shot several times and died at a hospital.
A man in the house was also shot several times and was taken to the
hospital.
The house had been under investigation for months.

Fire broke out at a Pennzoil refinery in Western Pennsylvania today-

Four people are hurt and one person is missing.
About 250-thousand gallons of a solvent burned for about two hours at the
site near Rouseville.
A worker at a nearby gas station says he heard an explosion before the
fire, but a company spokesman disputes that claim.
Pennzoil says about 200 people are employed at the plant, but it's not
known how many were working at the time of the fire.

injured.

It happened just about an hour ago in Elliston.

A train struck the bed of a truck as the driver attempted to cross in front
it.
The driver and his passenger were injured in the accident.
He says he never saw the train.
The engineer of the train says he sounded his whistle to try to get the
truck driver out of his way.
The identities of the injuried have not been released, but there injuries
are not believed to be life threatening.
