A collision between a train and a pick up truck in Montgomery County has
injured two people.
It happened just before 4:30 this afternoon on Blount Road behind the
Elliston post office.
The train consisted of 10 engines and was not carrying any cargo.
The conductor told police he blew the whistle, but the driver of the truck did
not heed his warning.

The train struck the side of the truck bed. Police say the driver, Tommy
Lee Wheeler of Elliston, said he never saw the train.
Wheeler and a passenger, Brenda Dowdy of Blacksburg, were both taken to
Montgomery Regional Hospital.
General Assembly candidates in the Roanoke Valley continue to raise money at
a record pace.
Five of the candidates have raised more than 100- thousand dollars, and one
of them is closing in on 200- thousand.

(( According to the latest campaign finance reports, State Senator Brandon
Bell has built the biggest bankroll... more than 175- thousand dollars so far.
Democratic challenger John Edwards picked up more than 20- thousand dollars
during the latest reporting period, but Roanoke's vice mayor still trails the
incumbent by almost 100- thousand dollars.
Republican house candidate Trixie Averill and Democratic delegate Dick
Cranwell are running the most expensive race in the Valley.
Cranwell has raised more than 68- thousand dollars since the last report,
and the two have now collected more than 300- thousand dollars between them.
Roanoke Republican Newell Falkinburg isn't far behind.
He has raised almost 140- thousand in his bid to replace Chip Woodrum in the
House of Delegates.
But Woodrum is closing the gap. His contributions now total more than 119-
The numbers are certain to increase substantially before election day. The
latest figures document fundraising through the end of September.

In the Valley's other contested race, democratic delegate Vic Thomas has
raised more than 50- thousand dollars.
The report of his republican challenger, Jeff Artis, was not available this
Halifax County's Commonwealth's Attorney may have violated state code with a
campaign letter he sent to county residents.
John Greenbacker admits he used the state seal at the top of the letter.
Officials with the Secretary of the Commonwealth's office says it's
considered misconduct to do so for non- governmental reasons.
Deputy Secretary Georgia Root hasn't seen the letter, but says when she does
she'll notify Greenbacker by mail.
Repeat offenders could be fined or sentenced to jail.
Greenbacker says he's not entirely convinced the reproduction violated the
But he says he won't use it again in his campaign.
A major supermarket chain is coming to Danville.
Officials with Hannaford Brothers of Maine say the company plans to build a
54- thousand square foot Food and Drug Superstore.
The location has not yet been confirmed.
A spokesperson says the six- million- dollar investment will create between
100- and 150- new jobs.
The grocery store is a Fortune 500- company with more than 118- supermarkets
along the East Coast.
An official says the company is working to establish itself in Virginia and
Hannaford Brothers plans to open in Danville next fall.
A Wythe County plastic film manufacturer is moving ahead with plans to more
than double its work force.

Klockner Pentaplast is building an addition at its Rural Retreat plant.
Construction should begin sometime next year. The company expects to hire
up to 100 new workers over the next several years.
Klockner had hoped to start on the addition months ago, but only recently
reached an agreement with Wythe County on tool and machinery taxes.
The county lowered the rate so Klockner will not pay a disproportionate
share once it brings in 20 million dollars worth of new machinery and

Thousand of African-American men from around the country gathered in the
nation's Capital today for what's being called the Million Man March.
The Reverend Jesse Jackson made a fiery appeal to black men to take
responsibility for their children's education and also to vote.
Controversial Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakan said America's racial
lines have not changed since slavery.

neighborhood leader made a statement against what she called "passive racism."

The Republican plan to save Medicare gets its first test in Congress later
And G-O-P congressmen have spent the past few weeks explaining the plan to

Meanwhile, the airline hopes residents in the Danville area hit the road
before taking to the air.
Starting in December, Continental will offer van service between Danville
and Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro.
A move by First Union could affect its Roanoke Valley workforce.
The Wall Street Journal reports the Charlotte megabank may buy the mortgage
business owned by Prudential Insurance.
First Union has two mortgage service centers.
One in Roanoke has 200 employees.
The other in Raleigh, North Carolina has 600.
