The state is making sure prison inmates are paying their bills.
The Virginia Department of Taxation is going after the prison canteen accounts of 16-hundred inmates.
Officials say the inmates owe more than 100- thousand dollars for unpaid fines and court costs.
Inmates' money is kept in accounts by the Corrections Department.
Purchases at prison canteens or the inmate's share for medical services are credited against the accounts.
Any amount above 45 dollars is put into a reserve account, which is tapped by the court to pay the inmate's fines and court fees.
