That's how it started in the 1930's, when Greg Wade's grandfather opened the Alum Ridge Grocery.
By the '50's, the family had opened the first Wade's in Christiansburg, and started building a clientele with loyalty that spans generations.

As the bigger chains have moved in, that loyalty has enabled Wade's to not only survive, but thrive. It now has six stores in the New River Valley. suOne of the advantages to being small is that management can make decisions quickly on a local basis, rather than going through a corporate headquarters. That's something the so- called "big boys" can't do.su

Wade's efforts to buy locally is part of its secret to customer loyalty.

Despite the success, Wades is treading cautiously. A seventh store is going up in Radford, but the company is marketing a lot where it planned to build in Christiansburg, now that a super Wal- Mart with a grocery is moving in across the street.

Someone was inadvertently toying around with the U-S Air Force this morning.
Authorities became concerned when someone reported a military missile had crashed into an Alabama storage shed.

Police first described the missile as a live 18 inch long weapon with official looking Air Force markings on it.
A one block area was evacuated while Army bomb specialists came in to disarm it.
A security guard on his way to work noticed the small white rocket sticking out of the roof of his shed.
He alerted authorities thinking it may have been fired from a nearby Air Force base.

However all the speculation and concern turned out to be in vain.
Army officials say the missile was actually someone's hobby rocket and it posed no major threat.
