President Clinton and Russian leader Boris Yeltsin stepped away from the
celebration of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations this morning to head
for less friendly ground.

The jury will hear closing arguments today in the Selena murder trial.
There's no dispute that Yolanda Saldivar shot the singer, what the jury has
to decide is whether it was deliberate or an accident.
The judge has given attorneys for both sides up to 90 minutes for their
Saldivar was Selena's former fan club president.
A 25- year- old Henry County man was shot and killed in what police believe
to be a drug related incident.
Orbin Smith Junior was found shot at his home on Carver Road at about ten
He was taken to Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County where he

Relatives of Alesha Johnson want more done when it comes to Virginia's
Johnson was shot and killed by her boyfriend one week after he was arrested
and charged with stalking her.

Alesha Johnson had just recently turned 21.
And police say last Thursday, Johnson was shot by her former boyfriend
26-year old Larry Mack.
Family members say she was moving on with her life.

Family members say Mack had been staking out their apartment for weeks.
And shortly before her death Johnson filed stalking charges against him.
The stalking law went on the books in 1992.
Many say its over used and not taken seriously.

The law states that a person is guilty of stalking if on more than one
occasion that person's behavior places another person in reasonable fear of
death, sexual assault or bodily injury.
If convicted it's a class two misdemeanor with a maximum sentence of six
months in jail.

Bettina Altizer says maybe using computers to improve communication between
the different divisions of the court system will help prevent cases similar to
Alesha Johnson's family says they'll do what ever it takes to help other
families avoid losing a loved one.
They says they want Alesha to be more than just a statistic.

Police say Mack shot Johnson in Roanoke County.
He then went to a family member's house and committed suicide.
The Macks say Larry was confused about the break-up with Johnson, who he had
dated for two years.
They claim he wasn't stalking her but merely trying to find out why the
relationship had ended.

A Virginia Tech student is dead following an accident on Interstate 81 in
20- year- old Robert Lee Matheson of Danville was killed when another car
crossed the median and hit his car in front of the Ironto Rest area.
23-year-old Keith Wallace was the driver of the other vehicle.
He suffered minor injuries.
Wallace suffered minor injuries.
Police are still investigating.
There was also a fatal accident in Charlotte County yesterday.
Nine- year- old Travis Matthew Byron died after he was struck by a station
wagon on route 3-60.
And a four- year- old boy DIED after an all-terrain vehicle on which he was
riding rolled into the path of a pickup truck in Giles County.
State police say Brandon Mulford died Saturday.
Brandon and a teen-ager were riding Thursday on a grassy patch in a trailer
park where the younger boy lived, when the older boy fell off the vehicle.
Brandon remained on the vehicle, which then rolled onto Route 4-60 and was
struck by the westbound pickup.
Meanwhile in Franklin County, yet another tractor trailer overturned on
It happened a little after seven this morning.
Traffic was reduced to one southbound lane on the major road connecting
Franklin and Henry counties with Roanoke.
But it was never stopped completely.
The driver was airlifted by helicopter to be treated for his injuries.
No other information on the wreck is available.

Less than a month after he dropped out of the race for the White House,
California governor Pete Wilson is throwing his support behind
Senator Bob Dole.
At this hour the two are appearing at a joint press conference at Dole's
campaign headquarters in Washington.
Wilson will be Dole's campaign chairman and head Dole's presidential effort
in electoral- rich California.
During World War Two she was part of the three sister team that cheered
Americans through a time of fear and uncertainity.
Maxine Andrews, one of the legendary Andrews' sisters, died of a heart
attack this weekend while vacationing in Cape Cod.
She was 79.

Pacific theater, the Andrews sisters were with them...in spirit and voice.

They might not have been in the military, but they were the military's
favorite daughters, singing at war bond rallies across America, visiting
soldiers at military posts and hospitals, traveling to North Africa and Europe
for the USO.
In public it seemed the Andrews sisters were in uniform more often than not.
MAXENE: TO THIS DAY, I'M SURE THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO EXPECT ME--WHEN I
COME OUT AND DO CONCERTS, EXPECT ME TO COME OUT IN THAT UNIFORM."
Together with her sisters Patty, in the middle, and Laverne on the
right, who died in 1967, Maxene Andrews had 19 gold records..and sold more than
a hundred million copies of their songs. Even today, Andrews sisters
recordings still sell more than a million cd's and audio tapes each year.
Maxene was the only one to move on with her singing career after the
Andrews sisters stopped recording..yet she still remained tied to world war
She wrote a book about the war years recently..and last month, was a guest
of honor at vj day ceremonies in Hawaii.
Toward the end of her life...Maxene didn't think much about the Andrews
sisters...never played their records..rarely saw her surviving sister Patty.
Not because she wasn't proud of what the andrews sisters did...she says..it
was just a period of her life that was done.

Today's "Los Angeles Times" reports Nationsbank and BankAmerica are
discussing a merger that would create the country's largest financial

billion dollars in assets.
The paper cites a BankAmerica source as saying one difficulty has been in
deciding where the new bank should be located, since NationsBank is
headquartered in Charlotte and BankAmerica is based in San Francisco.

Michael Waltrip, who started on the outside pole, gets hit by Shane Hall
and slides into the barrels at pit row.
Mast has some engine problems and pulls his car behind the wall.
Then Earnhardt loses his chances at winning when he is black-flagged for
what appeared to be a missing lug nut.
But when he pitted, the lug nut was there.
To correct the mistake NASCAR pulls out the caution and re-lines the cars
putting Earnhardt seventh.
