brand new High School.

Last night the Roanoke County School board heard the results of a
feasibility study for southwest county schools.
The board recommended the new school be built as early as 19-98.
But Kimberly McBroom reports there are still a few roadblocks to get past.

BILL DEJONG/CONSULTANT: HAS IT BEEN A COMPREHENSIVE LOOK? HAVE WE REALLY GOT
INTO IT? HAVE WE FELT THAT WE'VE BEEN GIVING UP ON SOME THINGS THAT WE THOUGHT
MIGHT BE PLAYABLE? NO. I THINK WE'VE REALLY GIVEN IT A COMPREHENSIVE SHOT.
It's been a long road for the consultants-- as well as the steering
committee of school officials and parents, who've been working on the master
plan for southwest Roanoke County schools.
Among the long- awaited recommendations-- construction of a new Cave Spring
High School on Merriman Road, and the conversion of the existing high school
into a middle school.
After the school board makes its decision, final approval rests in the
hands of the county board of supervisors-- and the members are divided.
BOB JOHNSON/HOLLINS DISTRICT SUPERVISOR: IF THEY'RE GOING TO BUILD A NEW
SCHOOL, EVERY YEAR THAT THEY DELAY COSTS US A MILLION DOLLARS. SO, WE'VE
ALREADY SPENT THREE OR FOUR MILLION DOLLARS. WE COULD HAVE HAD THE SCHOOL
UNDER ROOF. IF WE'RE GOING TO BUILD ONE, WE NEED TO GET ON WITH IT.
But fellow county supervisor Lee Eddy is worried that financing a new high
school may be a tough sell to taxpayers in other parts of the county.
LEE EDDY/WINDSOR HILLS DISTRICT SUPERVISOR: THOSE PEOPLE WHO HAVE AN INTEREST
MAY NOT HAVE FULLY REPRESENTED THE INTERESTS OF OTHER CITIZENS IN THE COUNTY,
WHO ULTIMATELY, WILL BE ASKED TO HELP PAY FOR ANYTHING THAT'S DONE IN SOUTHWEST
COUNTY.
KIMBERLY MCBROOM/NEWS 7: NOW THAT THE RECOMMENDATIONS ARE ON THE TABLE-- IT'S
UP TO THE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS TO FINISH UP THEIR HOMEWORK. THEY'RE EXPECTED
TO MAKE THEIR DECISION BY THE NEXT BOARD MEETING, NOVEMBER 16TH. KIMBERLY
