Straight ahead on NEWS-7 at FIVE--

of New York City.
And in Lynchburg-- the social services department is relocating to larger
more convenient digs.
Plus on Health Check-- a woman in Pittsylvania County is teaching AIDS

A group of education and counseling organizations says the State Board of
Education is playing politics over guidance counseling.
Today, they issued a challenge to the board to move ahead on the hot issue.
Ellen Qualls is in our Richmond newsroom.
What's the controversy about?
In a nutshell, some Virginia parents have expressed concern that
psychotherapeutic techniques they disagree with -- like hypnosis and what they
call eastern religious techniques -- are being employed on their children
without their consent.
But guidelines to restrict counselors somewhat are now stalled by the State
Board of Education, with a majority of its members appointed by George Allen.

The inference from the Virginia Education Association, the School Boards
Association, and the guidance counselors is that they fear the Allen majority
board wants to place even greater restrictions on counselors than those that
have been largely supported in public hearings.
((ROB JONES/VEA: THEY'RE I THINK VERY NERVOUS ABOUT COMING UP WITH ANYTHING
