The medical examiner has determined the teenager found dead in the hills of Henry County Wednesday evening died of MULTIPLE gunshots to the head.

The body of 15-year old Lavina Scales was found on Route 679 by a passing couple.

The examiner says there was NO indication of sexual assault.
Scales was a sophomore at Martinsville High School and counselors are on campus to help students deal with the tragedy.
Police say they are still looking into several names that were written on a piece of paper found on Scales' body.

A Tazewell County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a Portsmouth man whom police say tried to attack deputies with a knife after a standoff.
Deputies found 50 year- old Jimmy Smith near Bluefield yesterday after Portsmouth police charged him in the slaying of his wife.
Tazewell County Sheriff Joe Johnson says Smith threatened to cut himself with the knife.
Johnson says he charged at the officers at the end of the 30- minute standoff.
